University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES), Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology (IMET), Baltimore, Maryland.
UMCES invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of research excellence using approaches such as omics, biochemistry, cell biology, and mathematical modelling to investigate microbial or symbiotic interactions. Research areas of particular interest include:
- the role of microbiomes and symbionts in marine invertebrate and vertebrate health and disease
- the role of microbes and symbionts in the production of toxins and bioactive compounds
- the role that symbionts, dinoflagellates, microalgae, and macroalgae play in harmful algal blooms, photosynthesis, nutrient production, or carbon sequestration
Promising candidates are expected to complement and strengthen existing research programs at IMET while expanding the institute's research capabilities. Candidates should have a strong publication record and demonstrate the potential to secure, or a successful track record of securing, competitive external funding. Candidates with an interest in applied and translational research and collaborating with management agencies and/or community groups are encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate's primary focus will be on research, with graduate-level teaching also expected.
IMET is a partnership among UMCES, the University of Maryland Baltimore County, and the University of Maryland Baltimore focused on applying science for environmental and economic benefits. IMET is conducting research across a wide range of prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems in a highly collegial and collaborative research environment. UMCES is a graduate research institution within the USM, dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge of environmental systems and applying science to address complex environmental challenges.
Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in microbial biology, genetics, ecology, marine science, or a closely related field is required.
