General Summary of Position

Ensures a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors. Patrols hospital property, responds to calls for assistance, and reports on conditions, objects, or persons that may impact the security and/or safety of patients, associates, physicians, visitors, or vendors. Responds according to established policies, procedures, and regulations. Security Officers are essential associates in a 24/7 environment and may be required to be flexible with scheduling and work “off‑shifts.”

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Immediately responds to emergencies to provide necessary assistance to employees and customers.
  • Conducts designated security patrols throughout the facility as directed. May be required to patrol the hospital campus/grounds via security motor vehicle or bicycle.
  • Monitors security and appearance of lobbies, waiting areas, elevators, and entrances.
  • Prepares and submits reports and logs of all incidents, investigations, and activities. Maintains department records, reports, and files as required.
  • Proficient in and utilizes nonviolent crisis intervention and de‑escalation techniques to ensure staff, patients, visitors, and all others remain safe, calm, and respected while onsite.
  • Provides assistance for way‑finding, parking, deliveries, and other requested information for the hospital and Med Star affiliates.
  • Responds to security and medical code calls. Investigates incidents and accidents, gathers information and evidence, notifies appropriate authorities or superiors, and calls for back‑up assistance as necessary.
  • Testifies at legal proceedings, hearings, and trials.
  • Works cross‑functionally to ensure safe and secure environments.
  • Conducts foot security patrols of hospital buildings and grounds as required. Observes and monitors conditions, objects, or persons that might require police action. Controls access to and inspects packages of those leaving buildings. Reports all safety, security, and law violations.
  • Collects and secures patient valuables and lost‑and‑found articles.
  • Monitors camera surveillance system.
  • Responds to circumstances where the exercise of law enforcement authority may be required.
  • Interacts with visitors and maintains designated security posts throughout the facility as directed.
  • Ensures quality outcomes for the security department by communicating with security staff and the public.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees, and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts. Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimal Qualifications Education
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Associate’s degree preferred.
Experience
  • 1–2 years of related security or law enforcement experience required.
  • In lieu of the related experience, an internal candidate who has 1 year of Med Star tenure may be considered.
  • Prior experience in healthcare preferred (or related field with a patient‑first, customer‑first mission).
  • One year of relevant professional‑level work experience may be substituted for one year of required education.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license (DL NUMBER).
  • IAHSS – Basic Certified Healthcare Security Officer (CHSO) certification from IAHSS preferred.
  • CPR – Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross required within 90 days.
  • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
  • Must successfully complete all Med Star initial training related to violence prevention, de‑escalation, and crisis prevention/intervention.

  • Basic computer skills preferred.
Salary Range

USD $18.33 – $31.61 per hour.
