Position: Crane & Fleet Tech I - Mechanical

Overview

Maryland Port Administration (MPA) is seeking a motivated, positive, and driven Crane and Fleet mechanic/technician to join the Crane & Fleet Maintenance Division. The primary responsibility of this position is to perform preventative maintenance, inspect, and repair all cranes, Passenger Boarding Bridges, fleet vehicles, and heavy equipment owned and operated by the MPA.

Responsibilities
  • Observe all crane and fleet operations during loading and unloading of cargo and operate machinery to ensure safe and efficient operation of cranes, fleet vehicles, and heavy equipment.
  • Perform crane start‑up process: power up motors, view computer screens for possible faults, visually inspect cables, mechanical equipment, and electrical components, and operate the crane.
  • Perform periodic preventative maintenance on cranes, fleet vehicles, and heavy equipment following prescribed job plan computerized reports; replace and fill engine fluids, replace and repair parts, report serious mechanical or electrical failures, and complete the preventative maintenance report forms.
  • Lubricate crane, fleet, Passenger Boarding Bridge, and heavy equipment parts and related equipment, including gantry trucks, drive gears, drive chains, transfer cases, motors, bearings, bushings, cables, spreaders, torque units, pivots, slides, rollers, roller pads, sheaves, wheels, wheel clamps, hinges, couplings, rails, rail guides, tension ropes, and linkages.
  • Develop and maintain effective communication with shipping companies, stevedores and International Longshoremen's Association members regarding crane operations.
  • Perform general maintenance and housekeeping work on cranes, fleet vehicles, and related equipment such as steam cleaning radiators, cleaning, lubricating, and draining/flushing of cooling systems and worm gear reducer; read blueprints, diagrams and schematic drawings to determine work procedures.
  • Assemble, set‑up, disassemble and transport mobile cranes.
  • Perform visual and mechanical inspections of wire rope cables, sprockets, welds, gears, shafts, sheaves and wheels.
  • Test and diagnose mechanical problems within cranes, the Passenger Boarding Bridge, fleet vehicles, and heavy equipment to facilitate and initiate repair processes.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or high school equivalency certificate.
  • Four (4) years of experience performing testing, calibration, inspection, repair and maintenance of electrical and/or mechanical apparatus.
  • Education at an accredited college, university or vocational‑technical post‑secondary school in electrical, electronics or industrial maintenance may be substituted for up to two years of the required experience at a rate of thirty credit hours for each year of experience.
  • U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as defined under the Experience Requirement of the Minimum Qualifications may be substituted for the required experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
Licenses & Certifications
  • Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with endorsements for Hazardous Materials valid in the State of Maryland.
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
  • Motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
Additional Information
  • Employees must be available for duty at such hours, day or night, weekends, and holidays, as may be required to maintain continuous operation of the MPA cranes and Passenger Boarding Bridge and are subject to call‑in.
  • Employees are subject to being on call 24 hours a day and will be required to maintain a reliable communication link for emergency call back requirements.
  • Employees that work with or may be exposed to hazardous materials, such as asbestos, lead‑based paint or chromium, may be required to undergo periodic medical testing and may be required to pass hazardous materials training and have the ability to wear a respirator.
  • Persons appointed to positions in this class must maintain a prescribed level of physical fitness and may be required to take a medical examination to determine physical ability to perform the work.
