The role involves rescuing swimmers in danger of drowning, monitoring pool activities, teaching water safety, maintaining clean pool areas, administering first aid, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards. Lifeguards will also assist in managing lifeguard chair, chemical readings, and water testing, and may receive additional training in hazardous materials, blood borne pathogens, and child abuse prevention.
QUALIFICATIONS- Lifeguard certification from an approved agency; must cross‑over to American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification within the first 90 days for full‑time positions.
- Current CPR for the Professional Rescuer (with AED) and First Aid certifications.
- Preferred Baltimore County or City Pool Operator certification (assistance provided for full‑time hires).
- At least 2 years lifeguarding experience for full‑time positions; references required.
- Must complete training in Bloodborne Pathogens, hazardous materials (HAZMAT), Oxygen Administration, and child abuse prevention as required.
- Ensure the safety of all swimmers during shifts and enforce pool rules.
- Present a professional image of the JCC and provide outstanding member service.
- Perform chemical readings and maintain pool conditions per Maryland bathing code.
- Maintain routine pool cleanliness, including scrubbing deck, railings, and scum lines.
- Participate in scheduled in‑service training.
- Maintain physical fitness and readiness to react in emergencies.
- Assist Aquatics staff in other areas as needed.
Candidates must be able to swim 500 m continuously in under 15 min, retrieve an object from water 10 ft deep and return over 25 yd in under one minute, perform basic rescues required for American Red Cross certification, demonstrate proper CPR, and respond to emergency scenarios. Lifeguards must maintain vision at 125 ft, endure extended periods at post (up to three hours), use ladder and hand tools for pool maintenance, and remove an unconscious adult from water under assistance.
