Job Title

Teacher – Nursery

Professional Duties
  • Plan and prepare courses and lessons for pupils.
  • Teach pupils, setting and marking work to be carried out by pupils in school and elsewhere.
  • Assess, record and report on pupils' development, progress and attainment.
  • Promote the general progress and well‑being of individual pupils and of any class or group of pupils.
  • Provide advice and guidance to pupils on educational and social matters and on further education and future careers.
  • Communicate and consult with parents of pupils.
  • Co‑operate with approved persons or bodies outside the school.
  • Participate in meetings arranged for the purposes of curriculum and school organisation.
  • Contribute to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to pupils, unless this might compromise the teacher's position.
  • Participate in staff development schemes and performance reviews.
  • Review teaching methods and programmes of work and participate in arrangements for further training.
  • Advise and cooperate with the Principal and other teachers on course development, teaching materials and assessment methods.
  • Maintain discipline and ensure pupils' health and safety.
  • Participate in arrangements for pupil preparation for public examinations and record assessment results.
  • Co‑ordinate or manage the work of other teachers, and perform administrative and organisational tasks related to these duties.
  • Attend assemblies, register pupil attendance and supervise pupils during school sessions.
Hours and Working Conditions
  • Full‑time teachers are expected to be available for 195 school days per year, with a maximum of 190 teaching days, and work 1,265 hours annually.
  • Follow break schedules: at least 30 minutes between 12:00 and 14:00 (or 14:30 for nursery teachers).
  • Staff cover responsibilities apply under specific enrolment conditions.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Hold a recognised teaching qualification for grant‑aided schools in Northern Ireland.
  • Minimum of one year of paid teaching experience in a nursery or nursery unit within a primary school.
  • Experience using a range of effective classroom strategies, including support for pupils with SEND.
  • Experience writing and evaluating Personal Learning Plans for SEND pupils.
  • Demonstrable experience using digital media and technology to enhance learning.
  • Registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before commencement.
  • Pre‑employment checks will be carried out.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of curriculum guidance for pre‑school education, safeguarding and child protection policy, and SEND code of practice.
  • Knowledge of teaching strategies that meet diverse learning needs.
  • Understanding of current assessment methods, including observations.
  • Effective teaching and classroom management to inspire and challenge pupils.
  • Ability to create a supportive, inclusive learning environment.
  • Problem solving, flexibility and initiative.
  • Collaborative working with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community.
  • Teamwork, motivation of self and others.
  • Alignment with the school's values and ethos.
Desirable Criteria
  • Minimum of two years of paid teaching experience in a nursery or nursery unit.
  • Background in early years as main subject of teacher training.
  • Experience with safeguarding teams and willingness to act as Deputy‑Designated Teacher.
  • Current first‑aid at work certificate.
