Job Summary:
The Tools & Automation Lead is responsible for overseeing the design, implementation, and maintenance of the tooling ecosystem that supports job scheduling, monitoring, and operational visibility. This role focuses on driving the reliability and efficiency of IT operations by leading the integration and optimization of tools that enhance infrastructure performance. Reporting to the Operations & Performance Director, the lead will manage the Tools & Automation Engineer, set strategic direction for tooling initiatives, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver innovative solutions that support the organization's strategic goals.
The role requires strong leadership in coordinating with Solution Architecture & Engineering teams across domains to develop tooling solutions that meet strategic and stakeholder requirements, while fostering the professional growth of direct reports and maintaining accountability for team deliverables.
Job Responsibilities:
Provide strategic direction and oversight for the design and implementation of infrastructure tooling solutions, maintaining alignment with defined standards
Develop strategies and roadmaps for the continuous improvement of tooling and platforms, guiding the team toward long-term objectives
Lead partnerships with technical teams to identify, evaluate, and implement monitoring and job scheduling tools across the infrastructure platforms and estate
Oversee requirements analysis for incoming requests, reviewing deliverables with stakeholders and managing the approval process
Drive a culture of continuous improvement by identifying enhancement opportunities across systems and processes, prioritizing initiatives, and delegating activities
Champion security-by-design principles across all tooling solutions, holding the team accountable for maintaining alignment with technical and security requirements
Direct incident response efforts as subject matter expert, providing escalation support for P1/P2 incidents and managing complex troubleshooting scenarios
Collaborate with architects, engineers, and third-party vendors to evaluate, propose, and implement new standards, technologies, and continuous improvement initiatives
Manage the Tools & Automation Engineer, providing mentorship, performance feedback, and professional development opportunities to build technical capabilities
Foster continuous learning within the team and maintain personal expertise on emerging technologies to guide strategic decision-making and architectural design discussions
Job Requirements:
Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or equivalent experience
5+ years of experience leading tooling and automation development and operations
Experienced in creating business value linked technology strategies and driving strategy through implementation
Extensive experience of leading the development and operations of Tooling & Automation teams and systems across multiple environment type:
Azure
VMWare
Hyper-V
Windows
Linux
Containers & Orchestration
Bare Metal
End User Computing
Experience integrating automation technologies with a broad range of monitoring tools, in particular Solar Winds and observability solutions such as Datadog
Understanding of Dev Ops processes and Agile development cycles and experience of support Continuous Integration (CI)/ Continuous Delivery (CD) platforms
A broad knowledge and understanding of Infrastructure systems and technologies:
IaaS Compute & Storage
Networking & Security
Databases
Virtualization
PaaS provisioning and configurations
DR, BC, and HA technologies
AD, AAD, Hybrid AAD and AAD DS
DNS & Azure DNS
Ability to carry out requirements analysis and create solution designs
Strong background of working within an ITIL service management framework
Expertise in vendor and managed service provider performance management
Highly analytical, with the ability to analyze service delivery performance and drive improvements
Strong team leadership and people development skills
