Responsibilities
  • Provides research-based specialized instruction to address instructional goals and objectives within each student’s IEP.
  • Assesses student progress and determines the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques.
  • Employs various teaching techniques, methods, and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals.
  • Develops and implements annual Individualized Educational Program (IEP) plans for students, including present levels of performance, needs, goals, and required services.
  • Schedules team meetings and works cooperatively with child study team members and others to develop instructional goals and strategies.
  • Coordinates the delivery of special education services in each student’s IEP.
  • Creates a positive learning experience with emphasis on individualized instruction using appropriate tools, including i‑pads.
  • Acts as the primary contact for parents.
  • Conducts special education evaluations and reevaluations.
  • Provides direction, supervision, and evaluation of educational assistants as directed.
  • Complies with School Board policies and all state/federal rules and regulations.
  • Completes all district and state reporting requirements.
  • Establishes and maintains student discipline in the classroom, school premises, or during school activities.
  • Implements classroom structure and consistency to encourage responsibility, cooperation, and mutual respect in line with district policies.
  • Collaborates and consults with educational professionals and community service providers regarding student needs.
  • Provides consultation to classroom teachers on adaptations, modifications, adaptive equipment, behavior plans, and other interventions for students with disabilities.
  • Performs other comparable duties as assigned.
  • Takes in‑service training as provided.
  • Shows self‑direction and follows directives from supervisors.
  • Maintains confidentiality at all times.
  • Regular in‑person attendance and punctuality are expectations of this position.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree, including all courses required to meet and maintain credential requirements.
  • An appropriate, valid, State of Michigan Teaching Certificate with the Learning Disabilities (SM), K‑12 endorsement.
  • Completion of all student teaching required for the appropriate teaching credential.
  • Experience teaching Special Education and caseload management preferred.
  • Excellent appearance, grooming, and personality that establish a positive example for students.
  • Better than average recommendations from student teaching supervisors or other professionals who have observed the teacher’s personal characteristics, scholastic achievement, and classroom performance.
  • Strong language skills: ability to read, analyze, and interpret general education periodicals, professional journals, teaching procedures, or governmental regulations; ability to write business correspondence and syllabi; ability to present information effectively and respond to questions from directors, students, parents, and the public.
  • Reasoning ability: ability to solve routine problems with minimal supervisory assistance; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, staff, and the community; ability to perform duties with awareness and consistency to the mission and goals of the Board of Education.
  • Physical capability: ability to sit, stand, walk, meet deadlines, and accommodate scheduled activities/events during a shift.

Additional Information

Salary Range: $45,000–$81,000; salary dependent upon education level and experience per Appendix B of the BTEA contract.
