International Crane Foundation Aviculture Apprentice

About the Role

As an Aviculture Apprentice, you'll gain hands‑on experience in crane care, breeding, and conservation. You'll learn essential husbandry skills such as feeding, cleaning, and health assessments, and work with artificial insemination, egg incubation, and chick rearing. In addition you will participate in facility maintenance, crane behavior studies, safe handling techniques, assist with behavioral observations, enrichment programs, and invasive species management. You will also engage visitors during keeper chats and tours and contribute to a project within the Crane Conservation Department.

This apprenticeship offers opportunities to explore veterinary medicine, field conservation activities, and collaborate on crane ecology and ecosystem restoration projects. By the end, you will have valuable experience that can lead to future roles in wildlife conservation.

The workweek is 40‑50 hours with two consecutive days off. Weekend and holiday work is required. Some tasks may include early mornings, evenings, or night checks. This role demands a strong work ethic, adaptability, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

  • Reliable, committed work ethic with flexibility to adapt to a varied schedule.
  • Ability to work long hours outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Valid driver’s license and eligibility to work in the United States.
