Overview
Registered Nurse (RN) Weekend Warrior (Healthcare)
Registered Nurse (RN) responsible for supervising the day-to-day nursing activities of the facility during the assigned tour of duty, ensuring care aligns with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations. Responsibilities may be required or delegated by the Director of Nursing (DON) and/or Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) to maintain a high level of quality care.
ResponsibilitiesAdministrative Functions
- Assist the Director of Nursing Services in directing the day-to-day nursing activities in accordance with applicable rules, regulations, and guidelines for the long-term care facility.
- Develop, maintain, and update written policies and procedures for the nursing service department.
- Keep reference materials (PDRs, regulations, standards) current and recommend materials to aid resident care.
- Maintain a current Nursing Service Procedures Manual reflecting daily nursing procedures.
- Ensure nursing staff comply with Nursing Service Procedures Manual.
- Provide written and oral reports/recommendations to the Director regarding nursing service operations.
- Periodically review and revise department policies, procedures, and job descriptions as needed.
- Coordinate nursing services with other resident services to ensure continuity of care.
- Ensure nursing staff are aligned with their job descriptions.
- Participate in developing and maintaining the facility's quality assurance program for nursing services.
- Participate in facility surveys conducted by authorized government agencies.
- Review and update resident discharge plans as required and assist in planning the nursing services portion of discharge planning.
- Meet with nursing staff and support personnel to plan department services, programs, and activities.
- Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as required; complete accident/incident reports as necessary.
- Explain department policies and procedures to personnel, residents, visitors, and government agencies as required.
- Perform administrative duties (forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting) as necessary.
- Protect resident information by not disclosing user IDs/passwords or resident health information; report suspected violations to the Administrator. Report unauthorized access attempts to the facility's information system.
Committee Functions
- Attend facility committee meetings (e.g., Infection Control, Policy Advisory, Pharmaceutical, Quality Assessment) as required.
- Assist in preparing reports of nursing service programs for committees and provide information to QA/Assessment as requested.
- Participate in Care Plan Committee activities and implement committee recommendations as directed.
Personnel Functions
- Ensure sufficient licensed practical and/or registered nurses and certified nursing assistants are available for each shift.
- Develop work assignments and delegate administrative authority to Charge Nurses as needed.
- Ensure nursing assistants are enrolled in or graduated from approved training programs; supervise trainees under licensed nurses.
- Make daily rounds to monitor performance and report findings; manage absenteeism and staffing; ensure dress code compliance.
- Review staff complaints and grievances; collaborate with other departments to maintain quality resident care.
- Foster a warm, positive, and calm environment; lead regular staff meetings to identify and address issues; evaluate staffing needs and performance; participate in disciplinary actions as appropriate.
- Report occupational exposures, fraud, and ensure proper security of computer workstations.
Nursing Care Functions
- Inform nursing staff of admissions, room assignments, and readiness of rooms; greet and orient new residents; perform rounds with physicians as needed.
- Encourage timely physician notes and orders; communicate changes in resident condition to physicians and families.
- Plan and review resident care with residents, families, and physicians; ensure care plans are followed and updated.
- Provide direct nursing care as necessary; start IVs and collect specimens as ordered; monitor vital signs and medications; ensure safe administration of medications and treatments.
- Oversee admission/discharge/transfer of residents; monitor seriously ill residents with the Charge Nurse; authorize restraints per policy; ensure proper medication procedures and safety musts.
- Inspect treatment areas for cleanliness and safety; ensure patients unable to call for help are checked regularly; arrange transportation for discharges; communicate with families on significant changes or outcomes.
Staff Development
- Participate in planning and delivering in-service training; support ongoing education in areas such as OSHA, HIPAA, Infection Control, Safety, and Quality Assurance.
- Assist in clinical supervision for nurse aide trainees; pursue continuing education to maintain licensure.
