Job Summary

The Bottling Laboratory Technician supports quality control for bottled spirits by collecting samples, performing lab tests (proofing, turbidity, pH, sensory analysis), managing data and inventory, and ensuring regulatory compliance. The role also assists with product development, cross‑trains in the distillery lab, and supports ISO/HACCP programs.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Sample Preparation:
    Collect samples from bottling lines, processing, and incoming raw material (caps, corks, bottles, labels, adhesives, and cases). Help manage sample retention to support root cause investigations.
  • Testing:
    Proofing by density meter (including obscuration/distillation sample preparation when necessary), turbidity, spectrophotometry, total acids, pH, cap torque, fill height, label adhesion, component measurements. Cross‑training in the Distillery laboratory will be expected.
  • Organoleptic Analysis:
    Participate in sensory analysis on incoming spirits, processing approvals, and bottling authorization to maintain quality standards. Support the single barrel program by conducting sensory analysis on potential picks.
  • Product blending:
    Participate in product blending exercises for new product development (both in house and to support customers).
  • Customer complaint root cause analysis for sensory, packaging, and liquid quality.
  • Support ISO/HACCP implementation and sustainment.
  • Develop/implement quality relevant work instructions and forms.
  • Database entry.
  • Regulatory compliance:
    Responsible for TTB adherence on product specifications, ensuring documentation is complete, accurate and on time.
  • Laboratory accreditation support.
  • Lab supply inventory management.
  • General housekeeping of Bottling Laboratories.
  • Outside duties as assigned.
  • Commitment to the Company’s ISO program, quality and food safety.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.
Desired Qualifications and Skills
  • Preferred 4‑year bachelor’s degree or a minimum of 2‑year Associate Degree in a technical discipline.
  • Minimum 2‑3 years in a laboratory environment.
  • Minimum 2‑3 years in the Beverage Ethanol Industry.
  • Able to take direction from management.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Accurate and consistent in performing duties.
  • Proficient analytical and technical skills.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Word and Excel.
Physical Requirements
  • Regularly required to talk, hear, sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, and climb all day; frequently lift and/or move items over 50 pounds.
  • Must navigate plant environment, including repetitive climbing of stairs and elevated walkways.
  • Frequent exposure to fluctuating indoor and outdoor temperatures.
  • Limited overnight travel may be required.
  • Must hear and understand verbal communication in person and over devices; detect and respond to alarms, warning signals, and emergency notifications; distinguish tone, volume, pitch for accurate communication.
  • Must read printed materials, digital screens, fine print; detect visual signals; operate tools, machinery, vehicles requiring visual coordination.
  • Must use taste and smell when tasting alcohol distillate.
