Job Description

As a PAT Engineer you will work for JR PAT Testing on a flexible, self‑employed basis, either part‑time or full‑time, mainly based in Friern Barnet but with opportunities across the UK.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting portable appliance testing at various sites such as hospitals, retail outlets, offices and other premises.
  • Using a range of test instruments to verify electrical safety of appliances such as microwaves, kettles and computers.
  • Recording test results in a PAT test report book or electronic system and providing employers with a copy.
  • Providing completion certificates, checklists and explaining findings to users.
  • Maintaining up‑to‑date testing equipment and ensuring all tools meet regulatory requirements.
  • Traveling to multiple sites in a day, organising the work efficiently and keeping the van fully stocked with testers and record books.

This role provides potential earnings on a pro‑rata basis depending on the number of tests, the rate per appliance and the job dynamics.

A typical day

Each day begins with packing the van with testers, record books and necessary tools. You then travel to the first job site, perform the required PAT tests, record and report the results, provide certificates, and repeat the process for subsequent sites. The work is physically demanding, involves movement between sites, and requires accuracy and organisational skills.

Benefits include flexible hours, the ability to work independent of set schedules, and the opportunity to develop expertise across a variety of industries.
