Job summary
We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated primary care Ophthalmology Consultant required to cover medical Glaucoma but willing to cover general Ophthalmology, as required by the department to join our dedicated and professional multi-disciplined ophthalmic team.
You will be a highly valued member of the team bringing your expertise and skills to a busy Ophthalmology department. The post will be complementary to the current sub-specialty interests of Medical Retina, Neuro-Ophthalmology, Uveitis, Paediatric Ophthalmology, Strabismus and Cornea.
The service is supported by Specialist Doctors, Specialty Doctors, Orthoptists and Specialist Nurses.
This is a consultant post at 1.0 WTE including ad hoc theatre session(s), outpatient clinics, admin and SPA. Part time positions will also be accepted. This post does have an on-call requirement:
First on call one night a week 5‑9pm and second on call 1:4 Weekends - 9am to 9pm.
This is a very exciting time to join the Ophthalmology Department at Barnsley Hospital as the department has recently moved to the Alhambra Outpatients Department in the Barnsley town centre. The Trust plans to significantly invest in the redesign of the service over the next three years in order to deliver an efficient, patient‑centred, one‑stop service in partnership with other local providers.

You will work as part of the Ophthalmology Department and are expected to provide a high-quality service and ensure excellent patient care.
Main
Responsibilities include:
(a)
Clinical Services: The appointed clinician will, together with Consultant colleagues, be responsible for the planning, delivery and improvement of clinical care in Ophthalmology at the Alhambra Outpatients. Work closely with the multidisciplinary teams to provide a high-quality Ophthalmology service. Advise clinical colleagues on matters within his/her sphere of experience. Liaise with other Health Care Organisations, Social Services, General Practitioners, Voluntary Organisations and the Hospice as required.

Education:
Contribute to the teaching of other grades of staff, both within and outside the department, including medical staff, nurses, paramedical staff and scientific and technical staff.
(c)
Clinical Governance The post‑holder will be expected to demonstrate continuing improvements to the quality of service provided within the framework of the Trusts Clinical Governance arrangements. This will include:

Management To contribute towards the achievement of the Trusts corporate objectives and strategic direction. To contribute to the management process within the Trust through participation in planning, project or liaison groups as appropriate.
