The Opportunity

Barnsley College is seeking an enthusiastic and industry-focused Lecturer in Games Development to join our Digital & Creative Industries department. This exciting opportunity will see you leading, planning and delivering teaching and learning on our Higher Education Games Design pathway, whilst also contributing to wider Games Development provision across Further Education and Higher Education programmes.

You will play a key role in delivering high-quality teaching, assessment and learner support, ensuring students develop the creative, technical and professional skills required to progress into higher education, employment and the games industry. Working closely with curriculum teams, employers and industry partners, you will create engaging learning experiences that reflect current industry practice and emerging trends within games design and development.

The successful candidate will deliver specialist teaching across a range of areas including games engines such as Unreal Engine and Unity, 2D and 3D design software including Maya, Blender and Adobe Creative Suite, level design, game systems, player experience, game mechanics, prototyping, production pipelines and professional practice.

This role offers the opportunity to inspire learners aged 16-18, adult learners and higher education students, supporting them to achieve their ambitions whilst helping to shape and develop an innovative and industry-relevant curriculum.

About You

You will be passionate about games design and development, with experience of teaching or assessing within an educational environment and a commitment to providing an outstanding student experience. You will possess strong industry knowledge and be confident delivering engaging teaching that develops learners’ technical, creative and employability skills.

You will be an excellent communicator with the ability to motivate and support a diverse range of learners, helping them to achieve their full potential. A flexible and proactive approach, combined with strong organisational skills, will enable you to contribute effectively to curriculum development, learner progression and department success.

Required
  • Degree (or equivalent qualification) in a relevant subject.
  • Teaching qualification or willingness to work towards a PGCE if a Level 6 teaching qualification is not already held.
  • GCSE Maths and English (or equivalent Level 2 qualifications).
  • Experience of working within an educational setting in a teaching and/or assessment capacity.
  • Knowledge and experience of specialist software including Unreal Engine, Maya and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Experience of delivering learning to a range of learners.
  • Experience of developing learning materials and resources.
  • Experience of working with employers and industry partners to inform curriculum planning and development.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to provide clear and constructive feedback to support learner progress and achievement.
  • Strong IT skills including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Self-motivated, organised and able to work effectively under pressure and to deadlines.
