Estimator - Structural Steel

Some structural steel businesses measure their output in projects. This one measures it in tonnes.
With more than 75 years in the industry, this established structural steelwork business designs, manufactures and constructs projects across the UK and Europe. Its Barnsley operation has the capacity to process around 50,000 tonnes of steel every year, covering everything from straightforward building frames through to complex structures.
The business has built long-standing relationships with clients and contractors, supported by an experienced workforce and the capability to take projects from initial enquiry through to fabrication and construction.
With a strong pipeline of work, the estimating team is looking for someone who can take an enquiry, understand what is actually being asked for and turn it into a commercially viable proposal.
The RoleYou will sit at the front end of the project lifecycle, working across enquiries, clients and internal departments to make sure opportunities are properly assessed and accurately priced.
- Assess incoming enquiries and identify commercially viable schemes.
- Prepare detailed and accurate estimates from drawings and technical specifications.
- Manage the tender process, coordinating with clients and departments across the business.
- Build existing client relationships while helping identify new business opportunities.
- Balance competing enquiries and deadlines while maintaining accuracy throughout the estimating process.
You will understand that good estimating is about more than putting numbers into a spreadsheet. You will need to interpret drawings, understand the practical requirements of the work and make sound commercial decisions.
- Previous experience working within an estimating environment.
- A practical understanding of the estimating process.
- The ability to work confidently from detailed drawings and specifications.
- Strong commercial awareness and a customer-focused approach.
- The ability to manage multiple enquiries and deadlines.
- Confidence communicating with clients and colleagues at different levels.
- Previous structural steel experience would be advantageous.
- A relevant technical or engineering qualification would be beneficial.
