Job Summary

We are looking to appoint an Assistant Management Accountant to join our Finance Team based in Barnsley or Wakefield. This role is part of a team supporting the Trust’s Care Groups, delivering high quality and timely financial management services to all budget holders. The Assistant Management Accountant will organise their workload to meet relevant financial timetables, support forecasting, costing, budget setting and expenditure analysis, and assist team members as required.

Main duties of the job
  • Support the Management Accountants Team in delivering a high quality and timely financial management service to budget holders.
  • Organise personal workload to meet financial timetables.
  • Assist with forecasting, costing, budget setting and expenditure analysis.
  • Maintain and develop financial systems, including project management of systems upgrades.
  • Process financial information, assist in costing and preparing annual budgets.
  • Prepare and input financial data into the ledger, ensuring accurate reports.
  • Generate invoices to external organisations.
  • Communicate internally and externally, responding to queries from budget holders.
  • Support team members and contribute to system development and upgrades.
  • Assist with financial and variance analysis in monthly reports.
  • Field routine queries and complete routine finance operational tasks.
  • Assess and improve work practices and contribute to efficient processes.
  • Maintain good relationships with finance staff and budget holders.
  • Be flexible and support other finance functions as required.
  • Perform other duties directed by senior finance staff.
Special Knowledge/Skills
  • In-depth knowledge of financial ledger operations.
  • Good understanding of budget setting processes.
  • Ability to produce clear working papers for managers and budget holders.
  • Understanding of monthly management accounts, external reporting and accounting policies.
  • Ability to develop good working relationships with budget holders.
Desirable skills
  • Advanced Excel skills.
  • Customer service training.
Experience
  • Track record of day‑to‑day management of a portfolio of budgets.
  • Detailed budget setting, producing monthly management reports, analysing variances and calculating forecasts.
  • Gathering intelligence to support senior staff decision making.
  • Simple costing and first‑line support to budget managers.
  • Support for systems development and maintenance.
  • Financial/system capability and design principles.

Desirable experience: NHS experience, Foundation Trust experience, Agresso system, service line reporting.
