Job SummaryAs a Biomedical Scientist Advanced Specialist within NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), you’ll use your specialist expertise in transfusion and transplantation science to help deliver high-quality laboratory services that support patient care and save lives.
You’ll perform, interpret and report complex investigations, ensuring results are accurate, reliable and delivered to the highest quality standards. Working alongside scientific, clinical and healthcare colleagues, you’ll provide expert advice, support service improvement and help solve complex scientific challenges. You’ll also play a key role in developing others by sharing your knowledge, mentoring colleagues and contributing to training within the laboratory.

Please note, the Laboratory will be open between the hours of 08:00 to 22:00, Monday – Friday and 09:00 – 17:00 on Saturdays. You will take part in a shift rota to work during these hours and will also participate in an on-call rota.
Main duties of the job- Perform specialist and complex laboratory investigations that support safe transfusion and transplantation services and help improve patient outcomes.
- Analyse and interpret routine and complex test results, using your scientific expertise to provide accurate and timely reporting.
- Maintain the highest standards of quality, safety and compliance, helping to ensure reliable services for patients, donors and healthcare partners.
- Provide expert advice and guidance to colleagues, hospitals and partner services within your specialist area.
- support and mentor healthcare scientists and other colleagues who are at an earlier stage of their development helping them learn, develop and build confidence in specialist practice.
- Lead and contribute to service improvements by identifying trends, investigating issues and implementing effective solutions.
- Oversee the use, validation and maintenance of laboratory equipment, reagents and systems to ensure dependable performance.
- Develop and review standard operating procedures, helping to promote consistency, quality and continuous improvement.
- Coordinate and support team activities when required, ensuring work is prioritised effectively and delivered to a high standard.
- Contribute to research, innovation and the ongoing development of specialist scientific knowledge within NHSBT.
Experience and Knowledge
- Extensive experience working in a diagnostic or testing laboratory, with specialist expertise in transfusion science.
- Strong ability to analyse information and resolve complex scientific and technical problems.
- Experience building effective working relationships with colleagues, healthcare professionals, and service users.
- Ability to prioritise competing demands, manage workloads effectively and work to challenging deadlines.
- Experience supervising, training, or mentoring colleagues and sharing specialist knowledge with others.
Qualifications and Training
- MSc in transfusion, transplantation, or a relevant scientific discipline, or an IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma (HSD) in Transfusion Science or a relevant science subject.
- Completion of a formal postgraduate training programme with relevant in-service experience, or equivalent alternative training and experience.
- HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist, with registration maintained throughout employment.
