Overview

As a Technical Author in the UK BAT team you will help produce UK-wide environmental standards for large slaughterhouses and animal‑by‑products installations. The role involves drafting BAT conclusions, liaising with technical working groups, and presenting final documents for publication.

Key Responsibilities

• Draft BAT conclusions and prepare final documents for publication as environmental standards.
• Liaise with Technical Working Groups and stakeholders.
• Critically analyse technical arguments and data.
• Write and edit technical documents.
• Manage projects and meet deadlines.
• Travel and overnight stays as required.

Qualifications & Experience

Education and Experience

• At least 5 years working experience in the slaughterhouse or animal‑by‑products industry.
• Solid understanding of environmental regulation in the industrial sector.
• Knowledge of UK and EU industrial environmental legislation (IED, Environmental Permitting Regulations).

Technical Skills

• Collection and technical analysis of complex industrial data.
• Understanding of BAT conclusions implications for permits, industry and the environment.
• Excellent verbal and written communication.
• Building and maintaining relationships.
• Planning, prioritising and organising tasks for timely results.
• Responding flexibly to challenges and building consensus.
• Cross‑cultural communication and diversity awareness.

Other Information

Contract: Up to 2 years from appointment.

The UK BAT team is embedded within the Environment & Business Directorate and reports to DEFRA and the Standards Council.
