OverviewAs a Technical Author in the UK BAT team you will help produce UK-wide environmental standards for large slaughterhouses and animal‑by‑products installations. The role involves drafting BAT conclusions, liaising with technical working groups, and presenting final documents for publication.
Key Responsibilities- Draft BAT conclusions and prepare final documents for publication as environmental standards.
- Liaise with Technical Working Groups and stakeholders.
- Critically analyse technical arguments and data.
- Write and edit technical documents.
- Manage projects and meet deadlines.
- Travel and overnight stays as required.
Education and Experience
- At least 5 years working experience in the slaughterhouse or animal‑by‑products industry.
- Solid understanding of environmental regulation in the industrial sector.
- Knowledge of UK and EU industrial environmental legislation (IED, Environmental Permitting Regulations).
Technical Skills
- Collection and technical analysis of complex industrial data.
- Understanding of BAT conclusions implications for permits, industry and the environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication.
- Building and maintaining relationships.
- Planning, prioritising and organising tasks for timely results.
- Responding flexibly to challenges and building consensus.
- Cross‑cultural communication and diversity awareness.
Contract: Up to 2 years from appointment.

The UK BAT team is embedded within the Environment & Business Directorate and reports to DEFRA and the Standards Council.
