More detail about the role The Clinical Maternity Matron will have clinical and managerial responsibility for a defined midwifery portfolio within the Trust, with specific accountability for inpatient maternity services, including Labour Ward, Antenatal Ward and Postnatal Ward areas. Working closely with the Head and Deputy Head of Midwifery and Gynaecology, the post holder will support the delivery of high-quality maternity services and provide strong, visible leadership to ensure the highest standards of clinical care, safety and patient experience.

The post holder will be accountable for maintaining and improving standards of care across Labour Ward and Antenatal/Postnatal services, with a particular focus on clinical safety, quality improvement, service user engagement, operational performance and clinical outcomes. As a senior clinical leader, they will ensure that maternity services are responsive, effective and delivered in line with national standards, professional guidance and Trust priorities.

Working collaboratively with midwifery managers, obstetric and neonatal colleagues, and the wider multidisciplinary team, you will support the operational management of inpatient maternity services, workforce planning, governance, risk management and service development across your designated areas of responsibility. You will lead initiatives to improve quality and patient experience, oversee the effective management of complaints, incidents and learning responses, and drive improvements in clinical practice through the implementation of evidence-based care and continuous improvement methodologies.

You will provide professional leadership and support to teams working within Labour Ward, Antenatal and Postnatal services, promoting a culture of safety, compassion, accountability and continuous learning. The role will also involve supporting the delivery of maternity service transformation programmes, contributing to strategic objectives, and leading delegated projects. As a visible clinical leader and role model, you will champion high standards of care, support staff development and wellbeing, foster positive multidisciplinary working, and play a key role in shaping and influencing the future development of maternity services across the organisation.

You will also contribute to local, regional and national professional networks, ensuring that best practice, innovation and learning are embedded within service delivery. Due to the temporary suspension of intrapartum and maternity triage services in North Devon, the successful candidate may initially be based within the maternity inpatient services at the Royal Devons Exeter site, supporting Labour Ward, Antenatal and Postnatal Services.

The Trust remains fully committed to the restoration and reopening of North Devon maternity services as a key organisational priority. As services are re-established, the post holder will play a key leadership role in supporting the safe recovery, stabilisation and future development of maternity care across North Devon.
