Naval Architect (Permanent Position)
Westway, Glasgow
The RoleProvide Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering expertise to support JFD’s design activities from concept design through to engineering release for manufacture, and support mobilisation of equipment for planned exercises and emergency call‑outs globally.
Deliver engineering solutions that comply with JFD’s engineering strategy, governance framework and processes while meeting safety, cost, quality, schedule, and compliance requirements.
Key Duties and Responsibilities- Assess technical queries and provide engineering design input to new products and support the existing product range.
- Liaise with internal JFD departments (sales, procurement, production) to provide the best technical solution.
- Sourcing suitable components and materials; create part numbers and bills of materials.
- Produce engineering documentation (specifications, proposals, assembly instructions, test procedures, certification reports).
- Check detailed manufacturing drawings and documentation for adherence to company standards, processes, and internal/external regulations.
- Ensure engineering solutions are delivered on time and on budget.
- Conduct site visits to JFD offices and client assets as required.
Accountable technical checker of drawings and documentation generated to support the Mechanical Engineer role.
What we’re looking for- Excellent problem‑solving, written and verbal communication, and efficient organisational skills.
- Strong attention to detail and adaptability to changing scope or client demands with ownership and drive to completion.
- A methodical and thorough approach, delivery focused, able to produce results in challenging technical environments.
- Ability to coach, mentor and develop talent.
- Degree in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent industry experience.
- Post‑graduate or professional qualification (e.g., Chartered Engineer status) desirable.
- Structural design and analysis, trim and stability analyses.
- Analysis of hull forms with knowledge of stability, hydrodynamic performance and seakeeping.
- Deck layout / load‑out planning.
- Experience with Product Lifecycle Management systems.
- Design integration, coordinating inputs from other engineering disciplines.
- Concept development and feasibility design studies.
- Review/approval of Naval Architecture deliverables prior to client release or manufacture.
- Ship general arrangements and configuration drawings.
- Experience with submersibles and mobilisation/de‑mobilisation of equipment (advantageous).
- Familiarity with ISO 9001, 45001 and regulatory body rules (Class Standards, LR, DNV, National Standards, IMCA). Ability to apply these to develop conforming designs.
- Flexible approach to travel, both locally and overseas as required.
