The OpportunityWe are looking for an Electrical Controls Designer (Automation) to support the system concept and design of custom automation solutions.
This role is ideal for someone who:
- Hands‑on experience in electrical design within automation or machinery environments
- Has exposure to control systems (PLCs, HMIs, drives)
- Can contribute to system concepts and execute detailed design work
- Looking to grow into a Controls / Automation-focused role over time
- Has 3‑5 years of experience in electrical or controls design (automation preferred)
You will play an important role in translating system concepts into detailed electrical and controls designs and supporting projects through build and commissioning.
Role OverviewThe Electrical Controls Designer is responsible for supporting system concept development and executing detailed electrical and control system design for custom automation equipment.
Key Responsibilities- Support system concept and design development based on project requirements
- Design electrical control systems for custom automation equipment
- Create electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts using AutoCAD Electrical
- Develop Bills of Materials (BOMs), terminal lists, and technical documentation
- Specify and select components including PLCs, HMIs, drives, sensors, and safety devices
- Support control system integration including I/O checkout, testing, and troubleshooting
- Collaborate with mechanical designers and project teams to ensure cohesive system design
- Assist with panel build, installation, and commissioning activities
- Troubleshoot electrical and controls issues during system startup
- Ensure all designs comply with CSA, ESA, and applicable safety standards
- Maintain accurate documentation, revision control, and as-built drawings
- Contribute to continuous improvement of design processes and standards
- Produces organized, high-quality design packages with minimal supervision
- Successfully supports system builds and commissioning
- Manages multiple projects and deadlines effectively
- Proactively identifies and resolves design issues
- Contributes to strong team collaboration and project execution
- Diploma or Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, or related field
- 3‑5 years of experience in electrical or controls design (automation preferred)
- Experience supporting system design within automation, machinery, or manufacturing environments
- Working knowledge of electrical codes and safety standards
- Experience with AutoCAD Electrical
- Understanding of control systems (PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, sensors)
- Ability to interpret and contribute to system concepts and functional requirements
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Strong organizational and time‑management skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Hands‑on experience supporting panel builds or troubleshooting is an asset
- Willingness to travel for commissioning support as required
- Experience with PLC programming (Allen‑Bradley, Siemens, etc.)
- Familiarity with robotics, vision systems, or motion control (servos, VFDs)
- Experience in custom automation or machine building environments
- Knowledge of machine safety systems and risk assessments (CSA Z432, safety PLCs)
- Experience supporting commissioning, startup, or system validation activities
- Work on custom automation systems and machine builds
