Job Summary

The Mechanical Designer supports Sales, Engineering & Planning, and Production by preparing 3D models, mechanical drawings, and bills of material for custom steel fabrications and equipment. Using CAD (Solid Works) and established design standards, this role develops and updates designs from concept through to released manufacturing drawings and provides day-to-day technical support to the shop to resolve fabrication and assembly issues.

Responsibilities
  • Create and maintain 3D models and detailed 2D fabrication/assembly drawings in CAD (Solid Works) for custom metal products, weldments, and equipment.
  • Design new and modify existing products and custom projects, from concept through to manufacturable solutions, in line with customer specifications and internal standards.
  • Update drawings, parts, and assemblies based on feedback from customers, vendors, and the shop (ECNs, redlines, and quality findings).
  • Provide day-to-day problem solving on the shop floor (fit-up issues, interferences, missing details, alternate solutions).
  • Ensure designs consider manufacturability, safety, lifting/rigging, and realistic tolerances for heavy fabrication.
  • Assist Sales/Estimating with conceptual layouts, basic models, and preliminary BOMs to support quotations and scope definition, when required.
  • Collaborate with Engineering & Planning, Production, Quality, and Purchasing to ensure designs, BOMs, and routings align and support accurate ERP entries (JobBOSS² experience is an asset).
Qualifications
  • Graduate of a post-secondary program in Mechanical Design, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Industrial Design, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3+ years of mechanical design/detailing experience in a manufacturing or custom fabrication environment (metal fabrication or heavy equipment is preferred).

  • Experience creating and maintaining BOMs and working with ERP/MRP systems;
    JobBOSS² or similar ERP experience is an asset.
  • Strong general computer skills (MS Office, especially Excel, for BOMs and simple calculations).
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail, with the ability to catch drawing/design issues before release.
  • Good communication skills, able to work with shop personnel, sales, engineers, and suppliers in a practical, solution-focused way.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule and overtime if required.
