The Opportunity
The Infrastructure Department is comprised of five Branches, including three Design and Construction Branches, the Wastewater Operations Branch, and the Water Operations Branch. Key responsibilities include the operation and maintenance of the City’s environmental infrastructure and systems including water supply, treatment, and distribution; wastewater collection and treatment; and the design and construction of the City's infrastructure including treatment plants, pump stations, roads, sewers, water mains, sidewalks, stormwater management ponds, water towers and reservoirs, etc.
The City of Barrie Wastewater Operations Branch (WWOB) is responsible for the effective and efficient operation and maintenance of all wastewater collection and treatment facilities servicing the municipality including a Class IV Treatment Facility and Class I and Class III Wastewater Collection Facilities. The WWOB ensures that the municipal sewage works are operated and maintained in accordance with applicable legislation including but not limited to the Environmental Protection Act (EPA), Ontario Water Resources Act (OWRA), and the Occupational Health and Safety ACT (OHSA).
As a member of the Operations and Maintenance Section, the Operator 1 - Wastewater Collections is responsible for the day-to-day operation of all equipment, processes, and systems associated with the City of Barrie Class I wastewater collections infrastructure to ensure regulatory compliance, community health protection, environmental sustainability, and resource conservation. This position acts as the Operator-in-Charge (OIC) for assigned portions of the municipal wastewater collections system and utilizes performance data and instrumentation to monitor, evaluate, adjust, maintain and control the collections system.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)
- Two (2) year College Diploma in Engineering Technology, Environmental Technology, or a related discipline
- Wastewater Collection Class I Licence from the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation & Parks (MECP)
- Light Duty Plow with Hopper Competency Certificate OR a Good Roads Snow School Certificate
- Loader and Skidsteer Operator Training Certificate
- Valid Ontario Class "D" Driver's Licence with a "Z" endorsement in good standing
- One (1) year of experience performing duties related to the major responsibilities of the position, including:
- one (1) year of wastewater collection operator experience while holding an Operator-in-Training Wastewater Collections Operator License; and
- one (1) year of experience with municipal winter roads maintenance and municipal sewage works construction
Knowledge/Skill/Ability
- General knowledge of Asset Managment Planning for Municipalities O.Reg 588/17
- Working knowledge of the following:
Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA);
