Position: AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE (ASL) - ENGLISH INTERPRETER - Temporary
Location: Midland

Overview

The Simcoe County District School Board is seeking qualified applicants for the position of American Sign Language (ASL) - English Interpreter. The successful candidate is responsible to provide interpreting/translating services for a specific student. This position works the school year. A full-time (1.0 FTE) Interpreter works 35 hours per week. The SCDSB may consider candidates for part-time hours. Candidates must work a minimum of 0.5 FTE (or 17.5 hours per week).

Salary Range: $29.34 - $35.71 per hour

Responsibilities
  • Provide interpreting and translating services for a specific student in educational settings (classroom lectures, field trips, assemblies, and elective programs).
  • Collaborate with interpreters, teachers, students and other staff; support cross-cultural understanding of Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities.
  • Review and maintain a full range of educational curriculum materials for interpretation.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Principal, Special Education, in collaboration with the school Principal (e.g., student conferencing, researching data, developing information kits).
  • Attendance at meetings outside normal working hours may be required.
Qualifications
  • Required:

    Honours Bachelor of Interpreting Degree or Diploma in American Sign Language/English Interpretation from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of six months related work experience.
  • Fluent in American Sign Language and capable of interpreting between spoken and written English and ASL.
  • The board may consider applicants with a combination of education and relevant experience applicable to the position.
  • If you have not graduated from an Interpreter Program, you must provide proof of your ASL signing skill level with your application. A recent (within the past 12 months) ASLPI (American Sign Language Proficiency Interview) documentation should be included with the resume.
  • An acceptable ASL skill level assessment can be completed by one of the following two assessment providers. The cost of the assessment is the responsibility of the candidate applying.
    • American Sign Language Proficiency Interviews (ASLPI)
Preferred
  • Experience with in the Education environment.
  • CASLI (Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters) professional association membership preferred.
