Position Purpose Summary

The role is responsible for performing janitorial duties and ensuring The Salvation Army Barrie Ministries and facilities are maintained in a healthy, safe, and sanitary manner in compliance with applicable standards.

Accountabilities
  • Responsible for any combination of light cleaning duties to maintain defined work areas.
  • Ensure the weekly upkeep of the facilities: empty all garbage receptacles, put garbage out for designated garbage day and return recycling and composite bins when emptied.
  • Vacuum all carpeted areas, sweep all tiled areas, wash floors and baseboards in tiled areas, clean all glass areas, windows and ledges using a ladder when needed, dust all offices and furnishings.
  • Wipe down all tables, chairs, and door handles; check, clean, move, arrange, and dust furniture as required.
  • Maintain kitchen cleanliness: clean and polish sinks, toilets, counter tops, mirrors, and fixtures; clean washrooms and restock supplies.
  • Identify and report to supervisor any repairs that may require an external service provider.
  • Check doors and windows to ensure building security.
  • Perform minor repairs such as electrical (change light bulbs) and plumbing (unblocking toilets, troubleshooting flushing issues), wall paint‑patching, light furniture fixing.
  • Spot wash accessible walls, strip and wax floors, spot cleaning, and shampoo carpets as required.
  • Ensure the general upkeep of external property: keep sidewalks and entrances clear of snow and ice, salting, litter pick up and upkeep of storage shed.
  • Put up and take down chairs and tables as needed.
Health & Safety
  • Monitor and maintain mixed cleaner bottles for custodial use, ensuring all contain WHMIS compliant labeling.
  • Keep food bank area clean and safe by adhering to all health and safety standards recommended by Public Health.
  • Contribute to the overall safety of staff, volunteers, donors, clients, and guests by clearing fire exits and cleaning spills.
  • Use personal prescribed safety equipment and clothing as directed by the employer.
  • Report any workplace hazards, dangers, safety issues, injuries, or illnesses immediately and ensure care is taken with all equipment and property.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
Critical Relationship Management
  • Internal:
    Corps Officer, MU leadership and staff, volunteers, clients.
  • External:
    Community, general public.
Managerial/Technical Responsibilities

Reports directly to the Corps Officer. Direct reports:
None.

Financial and Material Management
  • Minor material responsibility.
  • No financial responsibility.
Working Conditions
  • Work environment is typically at the facilities in generally agreeable conditions.
  • Duties (groundskeeping) are performed outdoors.
  • The performance of the job requires operating industrial cleaning equipment and tools, mopping/sweeping, reaching, bending, twisting, lifting, occasional ladder work and fine motor skills.
  • Requires moderate to high attention when handling hazardous chemicals and using non‑motorized/general cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to lift/move up to 49 pounds.
Education, Experience and Qualifications
  • Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada.
  • Completion of Secondary School.
  • Up to 1 year of prior related experience: custodial and life skills and general familiarity with cleaning and maintenance procedures and equipment.
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety Standards.
  • Represent the organization in a professional and engaging manner.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member in a cooperative environment.
  • Self‑motivated, reliable, with strong integrity and confidentiality.
  • Effective organizational and time management skills.
  • Respectful behavior and positive attitude toward tenants and clients.
  • Attention to detail, problem‑solving, good listening and interpersonal skills.
  • Must comply with all Salvation Army policies, procedures, and associated legislation.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks (Abuse Registry, vulnerable sector check).
Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $17.60 to $19.85 with a maximum of $23.82. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role. The Salvation Army will provide reasonable accommodation upon request.
