Job Title:
Registered Nurse - Intensive Care Unit
The Registered Nurse in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is responsible for providing direct patient care in accordance with the mission, vision, goals, objectives and policies of the hospital and the Patient Services Department.
Primary Responsibilities- Meeting the College of Nurses of Ontario Standards of Nursing Practice for Registered Nurses and functions within the policies and procedures of the Patient Care Services.
- Organizing and implementing a plan of nursing care to meet the needs of each assigned patient.
- Uses evidence-based practice in decision making to coordinate patient care activities and provides effective resources and support as appropriate.
- Utilizies critical thinking skills to assess changes in patient status (complexity, stability) that may require consultation or transfer of care.
- Monitoring performance data with respect to patient care and workflow processes and outcomes and optimizing outcomes by participating as required in improvement activities.
- Participating in the orientation of new team members to the nursing unit.
- Attending educational programs and in-services to enhance his/her knowledge, and participating in the planning and implementing of same.
- Maintaining professional competence by assessing his/her own professional development needs, and establishing goals and actions to meet same.
- Assisting in maintaining the established standards of care through individual performance, participation in hospital committees, and assisting with performance improvement, work and patient flow activites.
- Working collaboratively with external education facility personnel to facilitate and support student learning.
- Maintaining an awareness of current developments in nursing practice.
- Performing Charge Nurse role when assigned.
- Functioning in accordance with established hospital emergency procedures.
- Promoting collaboration by effective communication.
- Participating as a member of the interprofessional team and promoting effective liaisons between patient, family, and physician, and other health team members and community agencies. Encouraging referrals to appropriate community resources.
- Demonstrating knowledge of and maintaining competence in accordance with RHPA and other relevant legislation and standards.
- Participating in assessing health needs and promoting health education and maintenance through patient and family teaching programs.
- Performs Critical Care Response Team (CCRT) role when assigned.
- Responds to Code Blue across organization when assigned.
- Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Program Manager. Potential to be utilized in other patient care areas.
- Registered Nurse with current registration with CNO required.
- Certified in BCLS required.
- Certified in ACLS required.
- BScN preferred.
- Completion of Coronary Care 1 (CC1) with rhythm intepretation experience within the previous two years required.
- Completion of Coronary Care 2 (CC2) required or currently enrolled with commitment to complete within six (6) months of hire. Critical Care Nursing Certificate or current enrollment into a program and completion within 18 months of hire required.
- Current Patient Assessment course within three (3) years required (exempt if newly graduated within the past 3 years) or currently working in acute care using assessment skills.
- Previous Critical Care experience preferred (ICU, ED, PACU, PICU, etc.)
- Two (2) years medical/surgical experience required.
- Insertion and maintenance of peripheral IVs required.
- Management of Central Venous Access Devices (CVAD) and PICCs including medication administration, dressing changes, and specimen collection required.
- Respiratory system management including familiarity with care for patients on ventilators, Bi-PAP, and high flow oxygen therapy an asset.
- Preference given to nurses with education and experience on defibrilation and external pacing.
- New grads who have recently finished consolidation in ICU or Clinical Externs who work in ICU would be considered.
- Experience with Critical Care Response Teams (CCRT) and other Rapid Response Teams an asset.
