Community Impact

As a Locum
Veterinarian you will have direct impact on reducing the pet population and supporting our purpose of keeping pets and people together. The Ontario SPCA operates two spay/neuter clinics, a wellness clinic, SPCA Mobile Animal Wellness Services unit, and hosts MASH-style clinics to bring routine care and spay/neuter services to underserved communities. We also find loving homes for thousands of animals each year at our animal centres across the province - animals who depend on the compassion of a veterinary care team to bring them back to health so they can get their second chance.

We are seeking an experienced licensed Locum
Veterinarian with a love for doing surgeries, specifically spay and neuter sterilizations. The Veterinarian will provide daily care and sterilization of all surgical patients and conduct maintenance of preventative health programs and medical protocols within the clinic setting. In partnership with the clinic manager, the Veterinarian will direct the work of RVT’s, VT’s, and VA’s within the clinic.

A Typical Day

  • Performing 25 spay/neuter surgical sterilizations per day
  • Examining animals pre and post-op
  • Provide recommendations for follow up care
  • Supervise the handling and recording of controlled substances by veterinary technicians
  • Ensuring that equipment, medications, and medical supplies are available and stored in a safe and appropriate manner including safe disposal of narcotics
  • Ordering and dispenses medical supplies
  • Ensuring Ontario SPCA policies and procedures related to infection control are followed
  • Actively support clinic staff and volunteers, and promote the development of skills related to the advancement of our goals and mission
  • Direct the work and provide feedback to RVT’s, VT’s and VA’s in the clinic

Set up for Success!

  • Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the province of Ontario
  • Be a member of good standing of the CVO
  • Small animal surgical experience
  • Ability to perform 25 surgical sterilizations per day
  • Relevant employment experience in a veterinary clinic
  • Previous surgical experience and strong animal care knowledge preferably in a high-volume setting
  • Ability to lift 18 kg (40lbs) and to stand for long periods
  • Open daytime availability including weekdays and some Saturdays
  • Previous supervisory experience an asset
