Roads Operator 1 (1 New Full-time Position)
INTERNAL/EXTERNAL JOB POSTING
The Town of Wasaga Beach is seeking energetic and self‑motivated individual to join our Public Works team as Roads Operator I. This position plays an important role in maintaining and improving municipal roads, right‑of‑ways, and related infrastructure.
Position Overview:Reporting to the Roads Foreperson(s), the successful candidate will support the Public Works team in a wide range of maintenance and construction activities, including but not limited to:
- Garbage and recycling collection,
- Grass mowing, brush cutting, and tree trimming,
- Asphalt patching (hot and cold),
- Shoulder maintenance and washout repairs,
- Traffic control and installation of traffic signs/devices,
- Sidewalk and curb maintenance,
- Barge operations may coincide with obtaining the SVOP licence through training in the Small Vessel Operator Proficiency Course,
- Maintenance of storm sewers and drainage systems,
- Assisting with construction and maintenance projects;
- Winter operations, including snow plowing, sanding/salting, and sidewalk/hydrant clearing
- OSSD or an equivalent combination of education;
- Valid Emergency First Aid and CPR certification (asset);
- Personal watercraft licence is an asset as the first step to obtaining the SVOP licence for barge operations;
- Knowledge of relevant safety legislation and standards (OHSA, WHMIS, OTM Book 7, AODA, etc.)
Skills:
- Skilled in the use of hand tools and operation of equipment commonly used in Public Works (e.g., mowers, compactors, chainsaws);
- Demonstrated experience in road maintenance and construction (e.g., asphalt patching, snow plow operations etc.);
- Experience in pipe laying and concrete forming/finishing (asset);
- Knowledge of safe operation of light and heavy‑duty vehicles, road construction techniques, and truck safety;
- Strong communication skills and ability to contribute positively to a service‑oriented team;
- Physically able to meet job demands, including heavy lifting and working in extreme weather conditions.
- DZ driver’s licence (required); AZ licence (asset for floating equipment)
- Acceptable and current driver’s abstract
- Ability to provide an acceptable criminal record check upon hire
- Ability to work regular hours (7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.) and winter operation shifts (5:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. or 1:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.)
- Availability to work overtime for road construction, maintenance, and snow removal as required
- Applicants may be required to complete written, oral, and practical testing as part of the selection process
- Compliance with Collective Agreement Article 11.05 ("Trial Period") and Schedule "A"
