THE OPPORTUNITY – ONSHORE SHUTDOWN LEAD, SUPPORTING BARROW GAS TERMINALThe Onshore Shutdown Lead is responsible for the safe, efficient, and incident‑free preparation and execution of the Morecambe Asset onshore shutdowns.
The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership across multi‑disciplinary teams and contractors to ensure shutdowns are delivered to plan, within budget, and aligned to late‑life asset and production goals. By driving integration, discipline, and continuous improvement, the role safeguards asset integrity, minimises downtime, and maximises value delivery from the turnaround.
Duration: Core role,12-month contract
PAYE Contract Rate: TBC

Spirit Energy currently have a non‑contractual hybrid working arrangement for all office‑based workers (Aberdeen and Barrow). 4 days must be worked in the office with compulsory days being Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The fourth day worked in‑office (either Monday or Friday) is of the worker’s choosing but should be in keeping with what is most efficient and effective for their team.
The office is open 5 days a week for full time, in‑office working if this is the contractor’s preference.
Role requires 24/7 availability during shutdown execution to support TAR delivery; continuous site presence is not required but responsiveness is key.
In role, you will be accountable for:
- Strategy and Scope Management
Working with the Shutdown Manager ensure the scope of work for the shutdown is in line with the life‑of‑asset shutdown strategy.
- HSE and Incident‑Free Delivery
Champion a culture of safety and operational discipline, ensuring shutdowns are delivered incident‑free.
- Shutdown Planning and Readiness
Deliver all shutdowns in compliance with Spirit’s Shutdown Management Standard. Manage all phases of the onshore shutdown — including scope freeze, mobilisation, execution, and closeout — ensuring clear control of scope changes.
- Execution and Operational Leadership
In collaboration with the operational site leadership, assume terminal activity coordination responsibilities during execution of the shutdown.
- Commercial and Risk Management
Define, gain alignment with internal stakeholders to develop the onshore shutdown delivery strategy and contracting model. Manage contractor performance against clearly defined scopes, KPIs, and deliverables.
- Stakeholder Management
Provide regular performance updates and decision‑making support to the Shutdown manager. Influence cross‑functional teams to ensure shutdown success, even without direct authority.
- Leadership and Team Management
- Strong People Leadership:
Lead diverse teams including Spirit staff, contractors, and managed services. - Decision‑Making Under Pressure:
Make timely, well‑informed decisions during high‑pressure shutdown execution. - Influencing Without Authority:
Align and motivate cross‑functional stakeholders without formal control.
To be successful in this role you will have:
- Significant experience in the oil and gas industry in a leadership role with onshore Terminal experience.
- Experienced in contract management.
- Experience in operations and maintenance leadership roles in late life assets a benefit, with knowledge of work execution processes to ensure integration of scopes into overall asset delivery.
- Experience in leading incident‑investigations
