About

The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Lead Mechanical Design Engineer to join our dynamic Platform Mechanical Integrated Delivery Team (IDT) at BAE Systems, based in Barrow-in-Furness. In this pivotal role, you will lead the mechanical engineering efforts within a complex submarine programme, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, innovative mechanical solutions. You will oversee multiple systems, provide technical assurance, and collaborate across multidisciplinary teams to meet project milestones and technical standards.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to critical defense projects that require precision, leadership, and technical excellence. As a senior member of the team, you will mentor junior engineers, foster a culture of continuous improvement, and support the delivery of vital submarine capabilities that safeguard national security.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a STEM-related degree or equivalent experience, with a strong foundation in systems thinking and platform-level integration. Professional registration such as Chartered Engineer (CEng) is highly desirable. Candidates should demonstrate a proven track record of delivering complex mechanical or multidisciplinary engineering tasks within regulated environments. Experience mentoring or coaching engineers at various levels is essential. Familiarity with project management and documentation tools such as Jira and Confluence is required.

Strong communication, influencing skills, and the ability to build effective working relationships across functions are vital. Candidates should also have experience in hazard assessments, change control, and technical documentation review. A commitment to continuous learning and professional development is expected.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the delivery of assigned mechanical engineering scope, ensuring quality, compliance, and timely outputs across design, integration, and qualification phases.
  • Take technical ownership of multiple mechanical systems, ensuring adherence to system requirements and effective interface management across disciplines.
  • Develop engineering artifacts including technical documentation, calculations, simulations, and analyses to support design validation and verification.
  • Manage task allocation, progress tracking, and resource planning using structured tools like Jira and Confluence, aligning activities with project milestones, schedules, and budgets.
  • Mentor and support engineers at all levels, fostering technical growth, confidence, and a collaborative team environment.
  • Collaborate closely with peers, suppliers, and stakeholders across engineering, safety, ILS, and supply chain functions to resolve issues and maintain project momentum.
  • Review technical documentation, support hazard assessments, and manage change control processes with sound engineering judgment.
  • Proactively identify potential delivery shortfalls, process inefficiencies, or documentation gaps, and implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance team performance and project outcomes.
