The Assistant Caretaker is responsible for supporting the day-to-day maintenance, cleanliness, security and presentation of the YMCA Barry Centre. Working alongside the Senior Caretaker, the postholder will help ensure the building provides a safe, clean and welcoming environment for staff, visitors, members and community groups in ensuring all workplace Hygiene and Health & Safety requirements are met.
Other Considerations:
The post holder will be expected to observe safe working practices in carrying out the required duties and ensure that instructions specified by technical consultants, contractors and manufacturers are adhered to.
- Carry out routine maintenance tasks throughout the building.
- Report maintenance issues that require specialist repair.
- Undertake minor repairs where appropriate and safe to do so.
- Assist with preventative maintenance to ensure facilities remain operational.
- Support the setup and movement of furniture and equipment for events and activities.
- Test lighting systems monthly, replacing where necessary minor parts such as tubes, bulbs, fuse starters and diffusers, in accordance with safe working practices.
- Maintain the grass areas as and when required
- To be responsible for ensuring clear and safe pedestrian access to the YMCA particularly in adverse weather conditions, for example gritting and clearing snow.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness across all areas of the centre including mopping, hoovering and general cleaning where applicable.
- Clean the gymnasium, communal areas, offices, meeting rooms, toilets and external entrances.
- Clear blockages, remove foreign matter from sinks, toilets, drains, kitchen grease traps etc and clean up spillages as required.
- Check the external areas of the car park for any hazards, litter or debris and remove if safe to do so.
- To ensure that gullies, drains etc are kept free from debris.
- Replenish cleaning and hygiene supplies where required.
- Ensure waste is disposed of appropriately and recycling procedures are followed.
- To clean the internal face of external windows and other internal glass within the limitations of safe working practice.
- Check the room hirer diary and set up meetings rooms to specific groups requirements.
- Ensure the meeting room is clean, tidy and ready to be occupied.
- Empty waste bins prior to rooms being occupied.
- To undertake porterage tasks as required including setting up and clearing away furniture.
- Open the building in the mornings and secure the building in the evening in accordance with YMCA Barry procedures.
- Carry out security checks during opening and closing.
- Ensure alarms, lighting and heating systems are operated correctly.
- Lock and secure all areas of the building at the end of the day, including checking lighting, heating, external doors and setting the alarms as required.
- Comply with all YMCA health and safety policies and procedures.
- Identify and report hazards or defects promptly.
- Assist in ensuring fire exits and evacuation routes remain clear.
- Use equipment and cleaning materials safely and responsibly.
- Ensure that instructions specified by technical consultants, contractors and manufacturers are adhered to.
- To report emergencies in the case of faults with gas, electric and water supply to the Finance & Operational Manager
- Work closely with the Senior Caretaker to deliver an effective caretaking service.
- Provide support to colleagues during busy periods and centre events.
- Deliver excellent customer service to centre users and visitors.
- Undertake other reasonable duties as requested by the Senior Caretaker, Finance & Operational Manager, CEO or other Senior Staff.

- Shift start and finish times may vary depending on the operational needs of the centre.

- Saturday working will be required as part of the normal working pattern.
- Undertake any other roles and responsibilities appropriate to the post
- Complete qualifications and CPD training that are deemed essential and developmental for the role
