Overview of Barstow Community College: Barstow Community College is an open-access, comprehensive two-year institution serving a diverse student population in the Mojave region of San Bernardino County, California. The College’s campus is located in Barstow, California.

Additional context: Established in 1959, the Barstow Community College District (BCCD) serves multiple communities and maintains a satellite learning center at the U.S. Army National Training Center in Ft. Irwin, California.

Continuing recruitment: This is a continuous recruitment for an applicant pool to fill part-time, substitute, temporary, or hourly assignments on an as-needed basis. Substitute compensation will be calculated using step 1 of the level the classification is placed on the Classified Salary Schedule.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate recruitment, assignment, and scheduling of student tutors to meet faculty and student needs.
  • Assist with staffing and scheduling of computer and tutorial labs; implement and post a master schedule; coordinate lab or classroom needs.
  • Assist student tutors and student workers with onboarding and orientation; supervise tasks as directed.
  • Oversee tutors and student workers to ensure timely completion of work and adherence to district policies.
  • Provide training for tutors and student workers, including use of study materials and online resources.
  • Update tutorial services, proctoring, and computer lab information pages with hours, services, and policies.
  • Analyze tutor scheduling and assignments to optimize learning support services.
  • Monitor student progress and refer to other college services as appropriate.
  • Proctor exams and assessment testing; assist with online and distance learning proctoring.
  • Distribute and collect testing materials; ensure compliance with testing requirements and report improprieties as needed.
  • Enforce student usage policies and guidelines; work with IT to maintain computer lab equipment and software.
  • Troubleshoot minor software problems; provide computer-related support for learning environments.
  • Assist students and faculty with basic academic computer usage and LMS access; support student accounts.
  • Collaborate with staff to provide learning support services; maintain inventory of instructional materials and supplies.
  • Maintain records for appointments, finances, and usage statistics; prepare statistical reports and surveys.
  • Publicize services and hours through classroom presentations and informational materials.
  • Maintain knowledge of testing requirements and participate in related conferences and training.
  • Distribute test records, issue routine printouts, respond to requests, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Perform general clerical duties; serve as learning support services receptionist and greet visitors.
Knowledge and Abilities
  • Knowledge of instructional programs and student support services; test administration and scoring; office practices and record-keeping.
  • Ability to interpret policies, laws, and regulations; maintain records; work confidentially; meet schedules; communicate effectively; train others.
Requirements

Education and Experience: Associate degree and three years of related experience OR any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Working Conditions

Environment: Office environment; may involve driving a vehicle to conduct work.

Physical Demands: Includes varied tasks such as sitting, standing, lifting up to 25 lbs, reaching, and operating office equipment. See description for details.
