Description
Under the direction of the Youth Services Supervisor, the Youth Services Librarian will help organize and implement a comprehensive slate of children and young adult services for the Bartlesville community. The Youth Services Librarian will assist with planning, organizing and performing a wide variety of program, public service, outreach, and collection development duties related to serving children, their families and caregivers, and teens.
The Youth Services Librarian will provide reference and reader’s advisory to patrons of all ages.
Job Category: Full-Time Regular. Some nights and weekends required.
Examples of Duties
- Plans, organizes, schedules, and runs children and young adult programs and activities, including story times, book clubs, and summer reading programs, among others.
- Works with Youth Services Supervisor to determine goals, plan and implement projects and special events.
- Visit schools and other local businesses to give books talks, read, promote the library’s summer reading program, and other programs throughout the year.
- Assists with collection development, including acquisitions and weeding of youth material.
- Helps maintains overall health of the youth services collection by monitoring condition, removing damaged items for evaluation, and ensuring items are shelved appropriately.
- Conducts tours of the library for visiting groups
- Maintains awareness of current trends in children and YA literature, child development, and library technology.
- Provides reference services to public, especially to children, caregivers and others using children’s resources.
- Assists in marketing and promoting library services and programs related to youth services. Other duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Library Science, or a related field MLS from an ALA-accredited institution.
- Library experience, especially in youth services, preferred.
- Eligibility for a Public Library Certification through the Oklahoma Department of Libraries
- Relevant experience working with children.

- Children’s literature, from board books to juvenile to YA materials.

- Library services for children and caregivers.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

- Providing creative activities for children.
- Familiarity with emerging technology.
- Evaluating, organizing, selecting and weeding children’s materials.
