Overview
POSITION TITLE:
Wine Steward

POSITION SUMMARY:
Responsible for beverage sales and service in the assigned station in the restaurant. In order to consistently exceed guest expectations and provide the highest levels of product and service, additional duties and responsibilities may be assigned as needed.
- Promotes and maximizes beverage sales in the assigned workstation.
- Ensures all beverages are used and accounted for following company policies and guidelines.
- Upsells to better quality wines and premium / super-premium brands.
- Ensures the wine list is presented to every table and suggests alternative revenue-generating beverages if guests do not wish to drink wine.
- Recommends and suggests after-dinner drinks.
- Provides prompt, attentive and courteous service to every guest in the assigned workstation.
- Serves wines at the correct temperatures and ensures proper service at the table.
- Maintains an attentive and proactive approach to refilling glasses, recommending a second bottle and assessing guest satisfaction with the product.
- Communicates problems, challenges, complaints or service difficulties in a timely manner to the Head Wine Steward, Maitre D’ or assistants.
- Provides feedback to the Head Wine Steward on guest comments about the wine list and developing trends in wine consumption.
- Assists the Head Wine Steward in training and education of staff involved in wine sales and service aboard.
- Assists with the Wine Tasting Seminar conducted on each cruise.
- Follows company policies regarding beverages used for hosting and complimentary purposes in the restaurants.
- Creates and maintains wine displays in the restaurants.
- Ensures proper use and maintenance of glassware and other wine-related equipment (e.g., wine list covers, ice buckets, decanting equipment, specialty glassware, bar equipment, check covers).
- Manages gift orders for the station and assists with wine deliveries to staterooms; ensures pre-orders are delivered with correct documentation.
- Ensures bottles kept from one meal to another are properly labeled and stored.
- Assists with stock takes on a cruise basis when requested.
- Following SOPs for pouring measures for beverages served by the glass.
- Meet & Greet guests upon embarkation and escort to staterooms.
- Assist with guest belongings, luggage, and delivery of amenities to staterooms.
- Assist with private parties and functions and address guest requests within the role of the job.
- Unpack boxes and stock areas; perform other related duties as assigned.
- Familiarity with Safety and Environmental Protection Policy and the SMS; carry out applicable policies and procedures.
Qualifications
- Intermediate to advanced English verbal and written skills, including proper grammar.
- Advanced knowledge and experience in meeting and exceeding revenue targets, service standards and guest satisfaction results.
- Intermediate to advanced knowledge and experience with beverage and wine products.
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a wine waiter in a land-based restaurant operation or on a ship.
- Basic to intermediate knowledge of wine lists representing regions in the program.
Education
- High School Diploma or foreign equivalent.
- Position-specific STCW training from an accredited educational institution.
- Proof of continuing education via certificates or participation in specialized wine courses and seminars.
