Job DescriptionThe Geotechnical Engineer plays a critical role in supporting the Operations and Environmental departments by providing civil and geotechnical engineering expertise across all facets of gypsum stack operations. This includes oversight of dike construction and maintenance, inspections, water management within process ponds, and direct management of engineering activities related to gypsum stack construction and closure. The role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving, regulatory compliance, and cross-functional collaboration.
Responsibilities- Provide day-to-day technical guidance for gypsum disposal operations and process pond water management.
- Troubleshoot operational challenges and recommend engineering solutions to optimize system performance.
- Review and advise on dike construction, stack stability, and overall gypsum stack system integrity.
- Anticipate potential issues and develop mitigation strategies in collaboration with Operations.
- Assist in the creation and maintenance of short- and long-term gypsum disposal plans aligned with operational goals and capital investment strategies.
- Coordinate surveying and geotechnical testing programs to monitor stack progression and water inventories.
- Analyze data, prepare reports, and present findings to senior leadership with actionable recommendations.
- Participate in the front-end engineering design of stack expansion and closure projects.
- Ensure full compliance with Florida Gypsum Management Rules, applicable federal regulations, and Consent Decree obligations.
- Collaborate with the Operations and Environmental teams to ensure alignment on engineering, permitting, and compliance matters.
- Perform other civil engineering-related tasks and special projects as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Environmental, Mining Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in surface mining, heavy civil construction, or industrial operations with exposure to environmental and safety compliance.
- Strong engineering design and analytical skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Familiarity with plant operations software and data management tools.
Skills & Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain licensure.
- Experience with geotechnical modeling, water balance systems, and regulatory permitting.
- Strong communication and project management skills.
