A Professorship in European Archaeology (Ur- und Frühgeschichte)
The University of Basel, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, seeks to fill a professorship in European Archaeology starting on August 1, 2026, or by appointment. Depending on qualifications, the position may be filled as a Tenure Track Assistant Professor, an Associate Professor, or a Full Professor. Yourposition
We are looking for a scholar to represent the entire field of European Archaeology (Ur- und Frühgeschichte) across teaching and research.
- Teach European Archaeology at undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD levels (BA, MA, PhD).
- Foster interdisciplinary collaborations in research and teaching with other disciplines in ancient studies.
- Contribute to the development of the integrated study programme of the Department of Ancient Civilizations.
- Have a research focus on Central Europe (desirable).
- Coordinate the curriculum in European Archaeology with other Professorships in the Department of Ancient Civilizations and with the Professorship for Integrative Prehistory and Archaeological Science (IPNA) in the Department of Environmental Sciences.
- Excellent doctorate and record in research and publications, appropriate to academic age.
- Research focus compatible with the Department of Ancient Civilizations and the Professorship for Integrative Prehistory and Archaeological Science.
- Teaching experience and commitment to innovative, practice‑oriented teaching formats, including digital tools, at BA, MA, and PhD levels.
- Track record in securing third‑party funding.
- Ability to work in a team and willingness to contribute to university self‑governance.
