In Roche’s Pharmaceutical Research and Early Development organization (pRED), we make transformative medicines for patients in order to tackle some of the world’s toughest unmet healthcare needs. In pRED, we are united by our mission to transform science into medicines and empower our talented people to bring forward extraordinary life‑changing innovation Therapeutic Modalities (TMo) organization is accountable for translating disease biology into high‑quality drug candidates across small molecules, large molecules, oligonucleotides, and genomic medicines.
As a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Oral Enabling Formulation Technologies, this high‑impact, technical leadership role focuses on overcoming the challenges of poorly soluble or poorly permeable drug candidates, driving the pipeline from discovery through clinical proof‑of‑concept.
- Enabling Formulation Mastery:
Establish a high‑impact technical network to maintain state‑of‑the‑art oral enabling formulation technologies for delivery of complex synthetic modalities. - Design and execute specialized formulations (e.g., lipid‑based delivery systems such as SMEDDS/SNEDDS, amorphous solid dispersion spray‑dried, hot‑melt extrusion) to maximize exposure in PK, PD, and safety studies.
- Drive the advancement of global formulation strategies by integrating novel delivery technologies to enhance absorption and therapeutic efficacy.
- Lead the technical profiling of NCEs and conduct rigorous develop ability assessments to identify and mitigate risks in molecular properties early in the pipeline.
- Act as subject‑matter expert for internal pRED scientists, advising on formulation strategies for complex synthetic molecules and fostering collaborative innovation across the organization.
- Act as pCMC Drug Product lead within research project teams, guiding the end‑to‑end CMC scientific strategy until transfer to the Technical Development Department.
- Plan, coordinate and effectively communicate with research teams, function, stakeholders and governance boards.
- Master modeling & simulation and AI/ML tools to predict drug performance, optimize formulation selection, and bridge in‑vitro data to in‑vivo outcomes.
- Ensure scientific excellence and operational efficiency while meeting dynamic portfolio needs through effective internal and external supply strategies.
- Very strong background in Pharmaceutical Research and Development, Chemistry or related field.
- PhD in Pharmaceutical Technology and at least 8 years of industry experience in Drug Discovery/Development, with 3–5 years specifically focused on Enabling Formulation Technologies for Oral Drug Delivery.
- Strong knowledge and experience in enabling formulation technologies such as lipid‑based formulations and polymer‑stabilized amorphous systems from screening to proof of concept and scale‑up supplies.
- Proven physical‑chemical and biopharmaceutical understanding of complex chemical modalities, typically exhibiting “beyond Rule of 5” properties.
- Proficient in utilizing and developing M&S and AI tools in preformulation and formulation development.
- Scientific leadership that allows engagement as a peer with both internal research and early development project teams and external collaboration partners.
- Proven ability to position ideas and drive strategic shifts in a matrix environment, influencing stakeholders across different functions and levels of seniority.
- Capacity to anticipate the impact of industry shifts and proactively adapt to changing priorities while managing multiple projects simultaneously.
- Commitment to maintaining the highest standards of scientific integrity and professionalism.
Roche is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We believe it’s urgent to deliver medical solutions right now – even as we develop innovations for the future. We are passionate about transforming patients’ lives and proud of the diversity that drives our success.
