The Institute of Molecular and Clinical Ophthalmology Basel (IOB) is seeking a Clinical Research Assistant to join the Retinal and Macular Degeneration Clinical Research Group. IOB combines basic and clinical research to advance the understanding of vision and its diseases and to develop new therapies for vision loss. The Retinal and Macular Degeneration Clinical Research Group conducts translational and clinical research in retinal disease with the goal of advancing novel therapies to patients. The group studies how retinal diseases progress over time, develops AI-based imaging tools and predictive models, and contributes to the development of new therapeutic strategies. Its work connects early-stage therapeutic development with large-scale clinical collaboration across more than 25 international partner sites in Europe, North America, and Asia, helping to translate laboratory discoveries into clinical applications.
position
- Coordinate multi-site clinical research studies, including patient scheduling, data collection, and communication with collaborating centers
- Manage regulatory documentation: ethics submissions, amendments, and study master files
- Perform structured annotation and grading of retinal images (OCT, fundus photography, adaptive optics) following standardized protocols
- Serve as the primary liaison for external collaborators and study partners, ensuring timely and professional communication
- Assist with clinical trial preparation, including protocol development, case report form design, and site initiation support
- Maintain and curate research databases, ensuring data integrity and compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
Minimum qualifications:
- At least BSc in biomedical sciences, optometry, orthoptics, biomedical engineering, life sciences, or a related field
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Strong written and spoken communication in English and German
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple parallel projects
- Interest in ophthalmology, retinal diseases, or translational clinical research
Preferred qualifications:
- Prior experience in clinical study coordination, CRA roles, or GCP-regulated research environments
- Familiarity with ophthalmic imaging modalities (OCT, visual fields, fundus photography) or clinical grading systems
- Experience with research databases, REDCap, or electronic data capture systems
- Background in image annotation or structured data labeling for research or machine learning applications
