Finance Controller - Basildon - Retail /Wholesale

📍 Basildon (Hybrid – 3 days office / 2 days home)

An established, high-volume e-commerce and distribution business is seeking a commercially minded Finance Controller / Senior Finance Manager to join its leadership team at an exciting stage of transformation.

With turnover of c.£40m the company is a market leader within its specialist sector. Operating across both B2B and B2C channels, the business sits between major multi-site retailers and specialist online competitors, combining scale with agility.

• Migration to a new Shopify e-commerce platform
• ERP transformation from a heavily customised on-premise SAP package to an upgraded version
• Process and systems modernisation across finance and operations
• This role will play a key leadership role in that journey

Reporting to the Finance Director and managing a team, this position combines operational control, commercial business partnering and leadership.

This is less of a purely technical, compliance-heavy Financial Controller role and more a senior finance leadership position focused on:

• Leading and developing a long-standing, loyal finance team
• Owning month-end, reporting and financial control
• Supporting budgeting, forecasting and cash flow management
• Acting as a commercial partner to operations and senior leadership
• Driving process improvement and systems optimisation
• Playing a key role in ERP design and implementation over the next 18–24 months
• The successful candidate will be the most technically qualified individual within finance and must provide clear leadership and credibility.

• Qualified accountant (ACA / ACCA / CIMA) or able to demonstrate strong technical capability
• Experience in high-volume, low-value transactional environments (e-commerce, retail, distribution or similar)
• Strong team leadership skills — able to mentor and develop junior staff
• Commercially aware and comfortable partnering with operational stakeholders
• ERP implementation experience highly desirable
• Comfortable commuting to Basildon 3 days per week
• Due to project timelines, preference will be given to candidates with shorter notice periods.

• Bonus: 12%
