Speech and Language Therapist

This is an exciting opportunity for a newly qualified SLT clinician or an SLT clinician looking for an opportunity to work within the Community Specialist Health Team as part of the Adult Learning Disability Service.

The post holder will join the experienced SLT team to deliver assessments and intervention sessions to patients with a learning disability, living in their own homes. The post holder will cover areas from Southend, Castlepoint and Rochford, Basildon, Brentwood and Thurrock, so a car driver is essential.

Main duties of the job
  • To assess, develop and implement Speech and Language Therapy Treatments to adults with learning disabilities.
  • To be involved in the development and implementation of Inclusive Communication within South Essex.
  • To contribute Speech and Language Therapy advice to positive behaviour management plans in the community.
  • To be an active member of the Team.

Job responsibilities
  • To write reports reflecting knowledge of communication difficulties.
  • To provide appropriate intervention and evaluation of outcomes.
  • To provide professional advice to others regarding the management and care of patients/clients with communication difficulties.
  • To demonstrate effective negotiation skills particularly in relation to case management issues with carers, service users and others involved.
  • To demonstrate clinical effectiveness by use of evidence based practice and outcome measures.
  • To undertake joint assessments with other Speech and Language Therapists and/or other professionals within this specialist area of ALD.
Person Specification Education
  • Bachelors degree in Speech and Language Therapy recognised by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
  • Experience working with adults with learning disabilities.
  • Knowledge of Inclusive Communication.
  • Current approaches to working with learning disability service users.
  • Knowledge of approaches to working with people with autistic spectrum disorder.
Skills and Experience
  • Good oral communication skills based on fluency in the English language.
  • Makaton or signing skills.
  • Experience of working with multi-disciplinary teams.
Personal Qualities
  • Shares the Trust's Beliefs and models this in their attitude and behaviour.
  • Enthusiastic and motivated team player, empathetic, flexible.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Ability to travel independently across sites as required.
