We are advertising for a Speciality Doctor in Emergency Medicine based at the Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The exact job plan will be negotiated annually with the post holder and take into consideration their career development needs and departmental needs. The position would be on a substantive contract.
Main duties of the jobWe run two Emergency Departments on two sites – The Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital in Basingstoke and The Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester. We are renowned in the region for the excellent training and supervision we provide to our trainee doctors and in 2019 won the National Royal College of Emergency Medicine Award for Learning Environment of the Year.
The Consultant body has current RCEM examiners and a recently developed Clinical Educators programme. There will be training and teaching package for all successful applicants and the opportunity to develop specific skills or areas of interest such as ultrasound, simulation, paediatrics and quality improvement amongst many others. There are also established relationships with allied specialties and some experience with the CESR programme and we would be very keen to support interested candidates to achieve Consultant level recognition from the Royal College via the CESR route.
Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is the major provider of hospital services to the population of North and mid Hampshire and surrounding areas. The hospitals in Basingstoke and Winchester provide a comprehensive range of acute services as well as being a tertiary referral centre for colorectal, liver, peritoneal carcinomatosis, haemophilia and pseudomyxoma surgery. Services are provided across Basingstoke, Winchester and Andover sites.
The Trust covers a population of 600,000 incorporating Basingstoke & North Hampshire Hospitals (BNHH), Royal Hampshire County Hospital (RHCH) in Winchester, Andover War Memorial Hospital (AWMH) and community hospitals. We provide one hospital service across multiple localities, delivering services as close as possible to the patient. BNHH and RHCH are 23 miles apart, situated in the middle of the M3 corridor, with excellent transport links to London and the south coast.

Person Specification Professional Qualifications- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- Full registration with the GMC with license to practice
- MRCEM or equivalent (Emergency Medicine specialty only)
- 4 years postgraduate with minimum of 2 years in specialty
- FRCEM or equivalent (Emergency Medicine specialty only)
- Minimum of 5 years postgraduate clinical experience
- Minimum of 18 months ED experience
- Eligibility to work in UK
- Evidence of experience in other specialties relevant to Emergency Medicine
- UK experience
- Successful completion of ST3 Emergency Medicine competencies
- Clinical judgement: experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk. Knows when to seek help, able to prioritise clinical need.
- Up to date ALS & APLS or equivalent
- Proven ability to work effectively in different clinical settings required in the job
- Practical skills: shows aptitude for practical skills, required in the job.
- Level One USS sign off
- Evidence of interest and experience in teaching and / or simulation
- Evidence of interest and experience in research
- Evidence of mentoring or educational supervision
- Published research
- GCP certification
- Formal qualification in teaching
- Instructor status on life support course
- Clinical governance:
Capacity to be alert to dangers or problems. Demonstrates awareness of good decision making. Aware of own limitations. Track record of engaging in clinical governance: reporting errors, o Knowledge and evidence of participation in Quality Improvement Projects o Evidence of service development projects / clinical pathway development o Evidence of involvement in responding to complaints learning from errors - Audit: evidence of active participation in audit.
