Job responsibilities

The Locum Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology will provide specialist clinical leadership and high‑quality care across Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, working primarily at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital whilst supporting services across Winchester, Andover and community sites. The post holder will join an established team of consultants delivering inpatient and outpatient Diabetes and Endocrinology services, alongside support for General Internal Medicine.

Responsibilities include consultant‑led ward rounds, management of a 25‑beded medical ward, triage of referrals, provision of Advice and Guidance, and specialist review of inpatient Diabetes and Endocrine patients. The role includes regular outpatient clinics in Diabetes, Endocrinology and Diabetic Foot services, working closely with specialist nurses, dietitians and the wider multidisciplinary team to deliver integrated, patient‑centred care. The successful candidate will contribute to service development, quality improvement, clinical governance, audit and research activities, ensuring services remain aligned with national standards and best practice.

The post holder will also play an active role in teaching, training and supervision of resident doctors and other healthcare professionals, supporting the Trust’s commitment to education and workforce development. Opportunities exist to further develop specialist interests, including insulin pump services, transition care, community integration and subspecialty endocrinology, while contributing to the future growth and transformation of Diabetes and Endocrinology services across the Trust.

Specification Professional Qualifications
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
  • Entry onto GMC specialist register or within 6 months of CCT at time of interview
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Completed UK training programme in Diabetes/ Endocrinology
  • Previous NHS Experience
Clinical Experience and Knowledge
  • Broad experience in Diabetes and Endocrinology
  • Able to look after Diabetes, Endocrinology and general medical in‑patients.
  • Evidence of research and audit
Clinical Skills and Ability
  • Provide a good standard of clinical care
  • Maintain good medical practices
  • Respect the rights and maintain trust of patients
  • Willingness to contribute to education of trainees and colleagues
Research and Teaching Skills
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
  • Awareness of current Diabetes and Endocrinology initiatives and developments
  • Recent relevant clinical teaching experience within medical and allied disciplines
  • Participation in research
  • Formal training in clinical supervision of junior doctors
  • Formal training in educational supervision of junior doctors
