Hours:

Duration:

The Council is seeking an experienced Tutor and Mentor to provide one-to-one, in-person support for a 16-year-old learner with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) and a formal diagnosis of Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). This role will take place within the Basingstoke district and offers a rewarding opportunity to support a young person over a sustained period.

The student presents with significant challenges in the following areas:

  • Understanding vocabulary, extended language, and complex sentence structures
  • Auditory memory and processing verbal information
  • Using spoken language for reasoning, inference, prediction, and structured explanations
  • Developing coherent narratives and clearly expressing ideas
  • Social communication, including forming and maintaining relationships
  • Identifying, expressing, and regulating emotions

A Speech and Language Therapy assessment conducted in July 2023 confirms a diagnosis of Developmental Language Disorder, a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition affecting receptive and expressive language skills. Support strategies should be informed by the student's Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and Speech and Language Therapy (SaLT) recommendations.

Responsibilities include:

  • Deliver personalised one-to-one tutoring across key learning areas, adapted to the student's language profile
  • Provide mentoring focused on communication skills, emotional literacy, and confidence-building
  • Use visual supports, simplified language, and structured teaching approaches
  • Break down tasks to support comprehension and information processing
  • Encourage engagement through positive routines and relationship-building
  • Promote social communication skills and emotional regulation strategies
  • Work collaboratively with the Council and follow EHCP and SaLT guidance
  • Experience supporting young people with SLCN and/or Developmental Language Disorder
  • Strong understanding of language-friendly teaching strategies and communication scaffolding
  • Ability to build trust and work patiently with a learner who may find engagement challenging
  • A reliable, consistent, and independent working approach
  • An Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service, or a willingness to obtain one
