Job Description

AECOM’s UK&I Water Resources team provides services to a range of public and private sector clients. The team comprises over 100 engineers and consultants nationally, delivering projects of varying scales from planning support to local developers, hydraulic modelling projects to support the Environment Agency, to nationally significant multi‑disciplinary infrastructure projects.

The Bristol Water Resources team forms one of AECOM’s UK hubs for delivery of hydraulic modelling, delivering a broad range of flood risk and water resources projects across the UK. We are looking to appoint a Senior Hydrologist to support the continued growth of the team.

You will become a key part of a dynamic, friendly and supportive team located in central Bristol, and you will be responsible for leading the technical delivery of flood risk modelling and water management projects across the UK.

We envisage that you will use your experience to develop robust technical approaches for the delivery of projects, and to take ownership of delivery to ensure projects are completed to a high standard. You will promote the adoption of best practice, through undertaking quality assurance reviews and providing mentorship to support the development of junior members of the team.

Here’s what you’ll do:
  • Lead and undertake standalone hydrological studies and support 1D‑2D hydraulic modelling commissions to assess fluvial and surface water flooding.
  • Preparation of Flood Risk Assessments (FRAs);
Strategic Flood Risk Assessments (SFRAs); surface water drainage strategies incorporating SuDS and environmental statements.
  • Undertake quality assurance of technical work within your area of expertise.
  • Nurture and develop graduate team members and junior colleagues.
  • Manage client relationships, clarifying expectations, success criteria and outcome measures in order to meet their requirements and deliver successful projects.
  • Assist with the preparation of bids and proposals for internal and external clients.
Qualifications Here’s what we’re looking for:
  • Undergraduate degree (2:1 or above) in Civil Engineering, Geography, Environmental Science or a related discipline.
  • Extensive practical experience in the application of hydrological methods, including FEH, ReFH2 and WINFAP for flow estimation.
  • Extensive experience in the use of GIS software including QGIS, ArcGIS and Map Info.
  • Extensive experience in production of hydrological estimation reporting deliverables.
  • A track record of leading the successful delivery of flood risk and water management projects, including liaison with private/public sector clients and regulators.
  • Experience in undertaking quality assurance reviews of hydrological estimation and associated reporting.
  • Experience in the preparation of tenders/proposals.
  • Personable and team focused, with enthusiasm to provide technical mentorship and support to junior team members.
  • Commercial awareness and the ability to support the team to deliver projects on time and budget.
  • Low flow hydrological methods, including Low Flows.
  • 1D and 2D hydraulic modelling techniques within water consulting, including software packages such as Flood Modeller Pro, TUFLOW and Info Works ICM.
  • M.Sc. / Ph.D. in relevant technical areas would be advantageous.
  • Chartered with ICE/CIWEM, or working towards chartership.

You will also be self‑motivated with an ability to work both autonomously where required, with a strong sense of commitment, a willingness to learn and a desire to work in a dynamic deadline‑driven team environment.

If you meet some of the requirements above or have transferable skills you believe would benefit us, we would be delighted to hear from you.
