Position: Mental Health Support Midwife

Role Overview

We are looking for 2 candidates (each 22.5 hours) to support the existing Lead Midwife caring for those with mental health concerns.

The role is based at either Basingstoke or Winchester Hospitals and requires 3 days per week of work.

Qualifications and Requirements

Candidates must be registered midwives with the NMC and have current UK experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and supervise the day‑to‑day assessment of pregnant and postnatal women in relation to their mental health needs, implementing plans of care and evaluating their effectiveness.
  • Work closely with the Head of Midwifery, Antenatal, Postnatal and Community Clinical Matrons, Named Midwife Safeguarding Children and Obstetricians; provide information and guidance regarding policy and protocols relating to Perinatal Mental Health and the impact on women and their families.
  • Liaise with Perinatal Mental Health Services, Community Mental Health Services and partner agencies to ensure women with severe mental illness are appropriately managed in the perinatal period.
  • Support and develop midwifery colleagues in implementing plans of care.
  • Promote excellent professional practice which promotes the role of the perinatal mental health midwives within maternity services and with associated partner agencies.
  • Be responsible for maintaining and disseminating local and national guidance relating to maternal mental health in the perinatal period.
  • Act as a source of expert specialised knowledge and clinical expertise in relation to mental health practice.
  • Provide clinical leadership and support to health professionals in the event of a mental health crisis.
  • Participate in hospital on‑calls – minimum 6 per year.
