Irwin and Colton have been exclusively retained by The AA to appoint a Head of Group Health, Safety and Environment. With over 120 years of heritage, more than 7,000 employees and over 14 million members, The AA is one of the UK's most recognisable and trusted brands. This role offers an opportunity to shape the Health, Safety and Environment function across its diverse operations, including roadside assistance, recovery, vehicle servicing, customer operations and wider Group functions.

This role will have a group-wide remit and lead a team of specialists. Building on a strong, established safety culture, the successful candidate will turn insight into practical action and influence leaders from the Executive team to frontline operations.

Responsibilities will include:
  • Lead the Group health and safety strategy, strengthening governance, risk management and assurance across varied operational environments.

  • Provide expert advice and constructive challenge to the Board and Executive team, translating complex risk and performance data into clear priorities and decisions.

  • Lead and develop the specialist team, building capability, clear accountabilities and a collaborative approach across the Group.

  • Advance proactive and predictive safety management through data and technology, learning from incidents and near misses.

  • Work with operational leaders, colleagues, unions and external partners to embed ownership of risk and deliver improvements in frontline safety.

The successful candidate will have:
  • A Level 6 occupational health and safety qualification, such as the NEBOSH National Diploma or NVQ Level 6, and CMIOSH or equivalent recognised professional status.

  • Significant HSE leadership experience within a complex, operationally diverse environment under UK regulation, including leading and developing specialist teams.

  • A track record of delivering health and safety strategy, governance and assurance, with experience of presenting to and influencing Boards and Executive teams.

  • The ability to turn data into action and drive continuous improvement; experience in transport, automotive, engineering or other safety-critical operations is desirable.

  • Proven experience in engaging a geographically dispersed workforce.

This is an opportunity to shape the Group's approach to Health, Safety and Environment and make a lasting impact.
