The Water and Wastewater Department has a key role in maintaining and improving the quality of life for the Citizens of Bastrop. Employees in this class maintain primary responsibility for maintenance and installation tasks for the City's water distribution and wastewater collections systems.
Under direct supervision of the Water and Wastewater Foreman, performs maintenance and installation tasks for the City's water distribution and wastewater collections systems. Operates equipment for installation and construction of water/sewer lines, lift stations, mains, and manholes. Locates problems and performs repairs for leaks, line breaks, faulty components and restores interrupted services. Performs some tasks independently, but generally functions as part of a work crew for City projects of greater complexity and dimension.
Performs related work as directed.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Perform various repairs of distribution and collection systems of the City, i.e., leaks, main breaks, faulty valves, broken fire hydrants, manholes.
- Operate various types of vehicles and equipment in the repair and installation of water and wastewater lines, i.e., backhoes, jet machines, heavy trucks.
- Correct wastewater stoppages and blockages in mains.
- Perform water connections and disconnections as directed.
- Perform various preventive maintenance duties, i.e., flushing wastewater lines, cleaning wet wells and lift stations, cleaning and maintaining vehicles, portable pumps and power equipment.
- Address complaints concerning high or low water pressure, discolored water, and metering.
- Install new water and sewer services, meters, taps; changes out existing meters as needed.
- Install new mains, valves, fire hydrants, manholes, etc.
- Ensure proper placement of traffic control devices, signs, and caution indicators per work site.
- Assist in ordering parts and supplies and maintains inventory of various parts and water pipe.
- Function on call for responding to emergencies and rotate weekday shifts as a relief technician.
- Attend periodic safety meetings according to department policy.
- Perform routine facility/plant maintenance duties.
- Provide assistance in various other utility functions as directed, i.e., maintenance workers, customer service, and assist other departments as directed.
- Performs related work as directed.
- Work schedule is Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m.
- 4:00 p.m. - Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential; leave scheduled should be managed so as to not interfere with the ability to accomplish tasks, including assignments with deadlines and special projects.
- Must be able to work holidays, weekends, or after hours for special events, meetings or during emergency situations as required.
- High school diploma or GED.; supplemented by one (1) year previous experience in the field, to include the safe and effective operation of a variety of light to medium duty equipment; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Valid Texas Class "A" Commercial Driver's License or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment.
- Acceptable driving record to be maintained throughout employment.
- Wastewater Collection D certification and Water System Operator D certification or the ability to obtain both.
- Considerable knowledge of safety precautions, and occupational hazards associated with the work.
- Considerable knowledge of the practices and materials utilized for water and wastewater distribution and collection systems repair, construction, and maintenance.
- Skill in the safe and effective operation of light and medium duty equipment used in the construction, maintenance, repair and installation of water/wastewater collection and distribution systems.
- Skill in operating a variety of hand-held manual, gas, or electrically powered tools, equipment, and machinery.
