Job Summary
The Mechanical Foreman supervises propulsion gear and steering system work to ensure safe, efficient, and high‑quality operations. This role leads the mechanical team, ensures compliance with marine standards, and supports accurate execution of installation, inspection, and maintenance activities.
Key Responsibilities- Monitor progress of jobs and report delays, issues, or resource requirements to the supervisor.
- Ensure proper use of tools, measuring equipment, and alignment instruments (laser, dial indicators, optical tools).
- Review technical drawings, job orders, and specifications to guide the team on work procedures.
- Plan, assign, and supervise work on propulsion systems, gearboxes, shaft lines, seals, bearings, and coupling assemblies.
- Oversee repair, installation, and alignment of reduction gears, steering gear systems, and rudder mechanisms.
- Troubleshoot technical issues and support senior mechanics in resolving complex mechanical problems.
- Conduct inspections and ensure all mechanical work meets quality, safety, and class society standards.
- Ensure availability of tools, materials, and equipment needed for assigned projects.
- Verify completion of job cards, inspection checklists, and service reports.
- Coordinate with engineering, production planning, QC/QA, and other departments to ensure smooth workflow.
- Lead, guide, and evaluate mechanics, fitters, and technicians in the propulsion, gear, and steering section.
- Conduct on-the-job training to improve team skills and adherence to technical procedures.
- 5+ years’ experience in shipyard mechanical repair, with strong background in propulsion, gearbox, and steering systems.
- Technical Diploma or Certificate in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent.
- Strong understanding of marine propulsion systems, shaft alignment, hydraulic steering, and gearbox maintenance.
- Ability to read blueprints, technical drawings, and OEM manuals.
- Good communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience supervising mechanical teams in a shipyard or marine environment.
- Safety training (e.g., OSHA, confined space, working at heights)
- OEM propulsion or gear systems training
- Rigging and lifting certification
- Hydraulic systems training
