This position sits close to both engineering and production, making it ideal for someone who enjoys translating product requirements into practical, high-performing tooling designs.
The Role in BriefThis role focuses on designing reliable and efficient injection molds that support stable production, consistent quality, and long-term tool life. The Tooling Designer will work closely with engineers, toolmakers, and production teams, from early design stages through mold trials and production ramp-up.
Key Responsibilities- Design and develop plastic injection molds using 3D and 2D CAD tools
- Create tooling concepts covering multi-cavity molds, runner systems, sliders, lifters, and ejection mechanisms
- Ensure mold designs consider material behavior, cooling efficiency, venting, and ease of maintenance
- Participate in DFM discussions to ensure designs are suitable for manufacturing and production targets
- Collaborate with internal teams to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and GD&T requirements
- Support mold trials and assist in identifying design-related issues affecting part quality or cycle time
- Update and refine designs based on trial outcomes and feedback from production
- Maintain structured tooling documentation, including drawings, BOMs, and revision control
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives related to tooling cost, durability, and efficiency
- Background in Mechanical Engineering, Tool & Die Design, or a related technical discipline
- Minimum 3 years of experience designing plastic injection molds in a manufacturing or tooling environment
- Strong hands-on experience with CAD software such as Solid Works, NX, AutoCAD, or similar
- Good understanding of plastic materials and how they behave during the molding process
- Familiarity with mold flow analysis and basic manufacturing processes such as CNC machining or EDM
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, GD&T, and engineering specifications
- Detail-oriented, structured, and comfortable managing multiple tooling projects at once
- Primarily office-based with regular interaction with the shop floor and tooling teams
- Flexibility required during key project milestones, mold trials, or urgent production support
