Pay range: $28.30‑$36.58 per hour. The offer will be determined based on scope and responsibilities, qualifications, internal equity, and market pay for comparable jobs.

About the RoleThe Fermilab Applied Superconducting and Technology Division (APS‑TD) is seeking a Mechanical Technician III for a 2‑year term to support the Magnet Systems Department. In the Accelerator Support Group under general supervision you will provide technical support for the fabrication, repair, and modification of accelerator magnets used within the DOE complex.
Day‑to‑Day Responsibilities- Fabricate, assemble, install, and remove a variety of mechanical and/or electrical parts, sub‑assemblies, controls, and devices for laboratory projects/equipment based on drawings, diagrams, and schematics.
- Generate or assist in generating hazard analyses for required work.
- Write procedures and documentation for all finished work; enter relevant work information into a database and/or personal logbook.
- Prepare and compile technical data and safety records using databases, spreadsheets, and other computing software.
- Provide moderately complex technical support and maintenance for a wide variety of instruments and equipment; troubleshoot problems and conduct repairs as needed.
- Conduct periodic safety inspections; assist with identification, packaging, control, and disposal of chemical and radioactive waste.
- Procure and maintain inventories of small parts, supplies, materials, and equipment for area of assignment.
- Assist in implementing and designing equipment and systems for the assignment area; drive quality in all job aspects.
- Provide guidance to less experienced technicians or contractors; often serve as shift supervisor for specific projects or tasks.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Abide by all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices relevant to this position.
- High school degree (or technical certificate or equivalent) plus 5+ years of extensive related experience, or 3+ years’ experience at a DOE laboratory or in a technical skill of strategic importance to the Lab’s mission (e.g., cryo, radio frequency, radiation protection, clean room).
- Experience working in a DOE laboratory environment is preferred.
Skills and Abilities
Required
- Knowledge of efficient safety practices, hand/power tools, and mechanical equipment: mechanical assembly/disassembly, light fabrication, production, and repair of magnets per specifications and written procedures.
- Knowledge of Windows PC environment; proficient with Microsoft Word & Excel.
- Skills in assembly, fabrication, written & verbal communication, following procedure: reading engineering drawings, taking measurements during magnet production, and detailing information in electronic written procedures using Windows PCs or iPad.
- Ability to work safely independently or in a collaborative team setting under limited supervision; assemble/disassemble components per drawings and sketches; consistently produce accurate work.
- Ability to utilize hand tools and make good judgments in planning work sequences and selecting tools & instruments.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings & manufacturer manuals (or similar documents).
- Ability to abide by lab policies, protocols, and procedures.
- Ability to perform safe and effective brazing.
- Ability to become crane & forklift operator certified.
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
- Ability for repetitive lifting of moderate weight.
- Ability to climb stairs and ladders; stand for up to 4 hours per day.
- Ability and willingness to work overtime on short notice in response to operational and emergency requirements.
- Ability to legally operate cars and light trucks.
- Ability to work mandatory overtime, rotating shift work, and call‑ins.
- Ability to meet Oxygen Deficiency Hazard (ODH) qualification.
