The expected hiring range for this position is:
$28.30-$36.58.

About the RoleThe Fermilab Applied Superconducting and Technology Division (APS‑TD) is currently seeking a Mechanical Technician III for a 2‑year term to support the Magnet Systems Department. Within the Magnet Technology Department, you will work in the Accelerator Support Group under general supervision. In this position, you will provide technical support for the fabrication, repair, and modification of a variety of accelerator magnets used within the Department of Energy (DOE) complex.
Whatyour day‑to‑day as a Mechanical Technician III at Fermilab will look like:
- Fabricates, assembles, installs and removes variety of mechanical and/or electrical parts, sub‑assembles controls and devices for Laboratory projects/equipment in the assigned area, based on drawings, diagrams and schematics.
- Generates, or assists in generating Hazard Analyses for work requiring such.
- Writes procedures and documentation for all finished work. Enters relevant work information into a database and/or personal logbook.
- Produces reports as assigned. Electronically prepares and compiles technical data and safety records for equipment using databases, spreadsheets, and other appropriate computing software and programs.
- Provides moderately complex technical support and maintenance for a wide variety of instruments and equipment in the assigned area. Troubleshoots problems and conducts repairs as needed.
- Conducts periodic safety inspections of assignment. Assists with the identification, packaging, control and disposal of chemical and radioactive waste.
- Procures and maintains inventories of small parts, supplies, materials, and equipment for area of assignment.
- Assists in the implementation and design of equipment and systems for area of assignment. Drives quality in all job aspects.
- Provides guidance to less experienced technicians or contractors. As assigned, often serves as shift supervisor for specific project or task.
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Abides by and is responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.
- HS degree (or technical certificate or equivalent) plus 5+ years of extensive related experience or 3+ years' experience at a DOE laboratory or in a technical skill of strategic importance to the Lab's mission (e.g., cryo, radio frequency, radiation protection, clean room, etc.).
- Experience working in a DOE laboratory environment is preferred.
Skills and Abilities
Required
- Knowledge of efficient safety practices, hand/power tools, mechanical equipment:
Mechanical assembly/disassembly, light fabrication, production and repair of magnets, in accordance with detailed specifications and written procedures. - Knowledge of Windows PC environment and facility with Microsoft Word & Excel applications.
- Skills in assembly, fabrication, written & verbal communication, following procedure: reading engineering drawings, taking measurements during magnet production, and detailing information in electronic written procedures using Windows PCs or iPad.
- Ability to safely work independently or in a collaborative team setting under limited supervision, assemble/disassemble components per drawings and sketches, consistently produce accurate work.
- Ability to utilizing hand tools & using good judgement in planning work sequence and in selecting tools & instruments.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings & manufacturers manuals (or similar documents).
- Ability to abide by lab policies, protocols, and procedures.
- Ability to safe and effective brazing.
